Dam skippy, plus he was hooking off that jab, The man is coming together all the way around. He is still a little awkward and that wind milling has to stop. He needs to keep fighting regardless at the moment of who he fights because he gets better each time out. He will get to Joshua and Fury and it will be worth the wait. Joshua is developing also and I can't wait for that one, however, I think that the most dangerous fighter out there now for Wilder is Ortiz.
What is important to note, is that it was Szplika. Arguably behind on points against Szpilka. That is the key thing. Things like awkward southpaw and stylistic anomaly should not cause you difficulties if you are up against a fighter of Szpilka's caliber. Wilder was just not able to position himself well due to his apparent tactical flaws. Imagine an awkward southpaw Szpilka giving someone like Klitschko problems. Odds are that he wouldn't win a single round on his way to defeat by someone of Wlad's (even at the age of 40) or Fury's ring intelligence or abilities. AJ possibly just walks right through him. However I do think that Wilder as a solid jab, and that he is a legitimate top 5 heavyweight with ability to defeat just about anyone. What he lacks is advanced ring intelligence and ability to master the distance and always keep himself in the right position. I would not be surprised if Povetkin just knocked him out, although I do favor Wilder slightly due to his physical advantages and of course youth. However, Wlad and Fury I would favor over Wilder due to their superior intelligence and abilities to control the fight. Klitschko could even knock him out. Joshua might still have a couple of question marks around him, but so far he hasn't displayed any major flaws. Perhaps he could encounter problems against master jabbers, but I'd definitely favor AJ over Wilder. Haye and Ortiz could also very possibly be too much to handle for Wilder. This is what I wrote before the Wilder-Arreola fight.
Good jab against a guy that hardly moved and stood off him, a punch bag in other words. A prime Arreola would have got in Wilder's face, showed more head movement and not been an easy jab target.
Yet again Wilder was winging it, with wild windmill punches, with his fists open He still does not even look like someone who is a professional boxer. He still looks like what he is- a failed basketball player who has just stepped into a boxing ring.
That's the problem with facing C and D opposition he's never had to do anything else than windmill his way to victory, his trainer and management are at fault as he's a good athlete.
Good post :good Wilder is indeed improving. It's not too late for him to start fighting the hard guys and setting himself down as a fighter worthy of remembering. However, he needs to step it up and fight said big names. Eg POVETKIN, his mandatory.
What's funny is how people put down guys like Stiverne and Arreola yet just 1.5 years ago clowns were claiming these guys could beat Wilder. Yet when Wilder fought them he beat both of them with extreme ease.
Arreola was clearly shot to bits. Stiverne was a decent win. I actually rate Wilder, but it's clear that his team don't have much confidence in him. If they had, they'd be pushing for the big fights - Joshua / Fury / Klitschko / etc.
I don't care how good his jab may or may not be. As soon as he starts winding up those windmills, he loses all credit. He looks hopeless. I hope to god one of the other tops fighters beats him and looks good doing it because if this is really the top guy at Heavy, smh.
He fights catiously now since hes WBC champ and fights semi-competitive opposition and relies on that jab more so yeah, some improvements were made obviously.
