I hope Joe Smith Jr. somehow pulls it off for the sake of boxing. Imagine if Smith wins and Kovalev wins the rematch and then these two have an epic build up for an unification fight where Kovalev goes full heel and Smith is Rocky to Kovalev's Drago. That fight would sell big.
Kovalev vs Smith jr in NYC for all the belts would be an awesome fight But first lets see in what direction Smith is going. Adonis will fight at the end of april in a voluntary defense. Before the Hopkins fight, local media in QC said that if Smith Jr pulls off the upset he'll be Stevenson next choice. Do they still want it? Does Smith Jr wants it? Cuz they we're talking in the ring after the Hopkins fight about a showdown with fellow Long Island Seannie Monaghan. Does he want to do some more build-up to his name and fanbase at home or does he straight for the title ? Adonis vs Smith jr would be a good title defense for Superman, but will he play it safe one more time ? Does Smith Jr feel confident about his chances with Adonis ? We shall see
I like Smith and I would like to see him develop in a class fighter. I don't like the fight with Stevenson or any other champion because even if he wins it will only be the result him getting a good power shot in that seals the deal, not because of a combination of his boxing skills and power. He will be a flawed champion with a short reign. Champions should have a variety of well developed skills at their command. That way if he loses his title we will know that the challenger was well prepared, well schooled and a worthy replacement. I am tired of all these lucky fly by night champions.
He'd be no more a FLAWED champion than was GLASS DAWSON.... Nathan Cleverly Chickenson Shumenov, who twice robbed Campillo, who once upon a time was a complete fighter, with the exception of an american fanbase.
Don't like Stevenson so I'll go with Smith by stoppage. It will be whoever can take the other fighters best shots that will ultimately decide the outcome here. But Smith After This Breakout Year That He just had, has earned a shot at the champion so hopefully he does get this oppurtunity next.
Smith deserves the shot. Would probably be good enough money to entice Stevenson, and I doubt he'd feel it was too much of a risk(although he may be wrong). One or the other team could always be too unreasonable in money demands, though. That's boxing.
Smiths gotta come out early here gunning for the KO like he did against Fonfara.. Once Stevenson has him timed the left will land at will. Smith has a punchers chance but only that... Stevenson wins an early rd shoot similar to the Williams Jr. fight. Doesn't look like this is confirmed though....
I do think superman has too much skills for smith, and probably win by KO. But I'll root for smith for sure.
