As probably the biggest broner fan in this thread.. I can tell you now, he does not deserve respect for his performance against mikey. At what point do we hold him accountable for his poor performances against elite fighters? Rather than say he's got heart and it was just better competition . He showed no heart against mikey. Absolutely none. He was PETRIFIED of mikeys KO power. He just stood there with earmuffs on letting mikey land shots on him. I wont be giving AB any excuses and wont be jumping on the hype train ever again. He's a gatekeeper at best now.
On one hand, it's true, he still fights the best and he shouldn't be hated on for simply not being good enough. He went out there and got his ass beat by a top P4P fighter for our entertainment and made no excuses. On the other, I think it's a lack of a true competitive spirit that has people turned off. His post-fight interview with Garcia shows that he refuses to demonstrate any sadness in losing and just tries to save face. One wonders if he's just in it for the money. He tried, but he tried too late. Again. I don't wish him any harm though I just hope he doesn't end up dead or in jail.
I'd like to see Broner fight someone who isn't an irrelevant contender but also not a top fighter. Another Granados type fight. Maybe Lamont Peterson. Because I think he's better than gatekeeper status but just can't hang with the very top guys. Especially at 147. He'll be a gatekeeper there but at 140 he could still be ranked 4th or 5th.
