It's pretty clear the boxers themselves have no final say- ultimately, that's Haymon's call.

This offer was nothing more than Jay-Z continuing to troll Haymon just as he has been. He's been offering deals for Haymon fighters and fights so far above the market rate that the only reason Al has to decline is the personal grudge.

It sticks it to Al in two ways- by putting his reputation of getting his fighters the most money to the test in the court of public opinion, and more directly, it puts him in a position where he has to pay his fighters more out of his own pocket. He paid step-aside money to his own fighter (Quillin) to drop the belt rather than work with Roc Nation.

Al could nix this by calling Jay-Z's bluff and letting him overpay a few times, but it looks like there's too much pride in the way.

 

It's not Haymon's ego. It's his business model. He simply does not advise his fighters to sign long term promotional deals.

Everyone in the industry knows this. It's not personal. Just business.

 

I hadn't thought of that but you may be right. The Quillin and Broner stuff has come out thanks to Roc Nation, but I wonder how often Goldenboy or Top Rank offered Haymon fighters big money and he nixed the deal? Like what was Duva offering Stevenson to fight Kovalev?

 

i would think if the offer was made, it probly came with a lot of conditions or stipulations.
