Broner dealt very well with Maidana down the stretch despite being out on his feet for most of that fight, so clearly he can deal quite well with the mauling and volume of a guy like Horn when the substantially more refined and just better all around fighter/athlete in Maidana was having some serious trouble with Broner. I fancy Broner to beat Horn in points in an ugly fight with plenty of lulls.
Best version of Broner at 147 was in 2013. I pointed out the Maidana fight because people have forgotten how strong Broner closed that fight - and IMO he would be capable of beating someone like Horn. 2013 to 2015 version of Broner has a chance at beating 2017 Horn, but I would favor that Horn over any other version of Broner.
Yea, I don't disagree that the best version of Broner would have a chance, but it's a slight chance. Horn is by far not elite, but he is a much bigger dude than Maidana. He's stronger. He's more 'fleet foot' than a flat foot guy. Broner is skilled, but he's not a heavy puncher. He's not even a volume puncher. He relies heavily on reflexes and efficient counters. How does he deal with a guy who is boarder line breaking the rules in every other exchange and/or clinch. Lunging in with his head at times. Broner is not know for staying calm in the storm. Horn is going to bring a storm every round off energy alone. I just don't see much Broner can do to with that style and size combo... At any point in his career. Especially if it's the '17 or '18 version of Jeff Horn.
Personally, I think Maidana at the time was levels above the best Horn had ever to offer, so I give Broner a fair shot and would probably even slightly favor him. But, you are fully spot on by pointing out how bad of a matchup Horn would be for Broner. Horn brought grit and volume, and Broner did not like volume.
I agree. I think Maidana was probably a much better opponent and tougher task than Horn. Horn was just from a physicality stand point an issue I don't see Broner handling well. And don't get me wrong....a focused Broner was definitely a problem (pun intended) for everyone he matched up with. Problem is he far too often he was more focused on being "the next Floyd Mayweather" outside of the ring and it effected his production in the ring. He definitely is in my 'wasted talent' category.
