Depends what Edner has left. Recent form suggests he is still pretty dangerous, having knocked out Chente Escobedo and Luis Cruz in his last few outings. He was a serious contender 7-8 years ago, though he was comfortably outpointed by Malignaggi & Bradley.

Hard-charging guy, fairly basic, no frills, but teak-tough and heavy-handed with a good engine.

 

I forgot Amidu was managed by Vaughn.

I wonder if Vince secured this fight by cornering Al Haymon in his office and putting on his mean gangster voice from his role as Frank Semyon on True Detective. :think

Entering the eighth. Herring doesn't seem to want the stoppage.

 

Yeah, he kept toiling away quietly in the shadows all these years. Relatively few television appearances but he is on a 7-yr winning streak and has a couple of decent wins in there, enough to justify his ranking to contend for a title.

 

Amidu gets in a couple of nice dash-in left hooks on the jaw, catching Herring stepping around him with a wide base after looping a left into Amidu's liver. Herring slightly jolted by it, circling wider.

Only meaningful exchange of the round. Amidu doing lots of following and little else. Herring just paintbrushes him with the long right jab from miles away, coasting the perimeter of the Corona logo.

When he punches, he's effective.

 

Interesting. Herring fought Danny Jacobs in the amateurs. He was dropped, but that's nothing to be ashamed of considering the size disparity (30lb apart now in the pros)

 

Herring using lots of lunge-feints, moving his right glove off the hip and lifting it as though about to jab only to jerk back. Amidu not reacting to it, watching from behind a turtle-shell. Lots of lazy meandering by Herring with his legs splayed wide. Amidu sundials in place, occasionally drilling in a right hand downstairs but mostly just standing there with his arms bent at 90° angles in front of himself leaning and weaving on the outside in anticipation of Herring's punches (which are themselves few)

 

Amidu exhibiting sparring partner mentality. He'll occasionally thread in a shot to punish Herring for a tactical mistake but he never presses the advantage, barely upping his work rate when he gets in close or catches Herring off position.

 

100-90 Herring. Yawn.

 

"Herring took care of business. This didn't scintillate the crowd but that was more the opponent's fault than his. If these scores aren't 3x 100-90 I'd be very surprised."
