    Hi guys,

My mate started pumping iron in febuary and lifts weights 6 days a week. He wants to put on some size but not get too bulky and get more defined. However, despite all this working out he doesn't take any protein supplements e.g bars or shakes because he thinks the shakes taste bad and the bars are expensive. He eats alot of tuna and meet instead.

Will not taking protein supplements seriously hamper his results considering how hard he works?

what he wants is a good strength training routine

    this is a good one...

    workout A
    Squats 3x5
    Bench Press 3x5
    Deadlift 1x5

    Workout B
    Squats 3x5
    Military press 3x5
    bent over rows 3x5

    3 times a week alternate from workout a to be, e.g monday-A wednesday-B friday-A Monday-B etc

this is the mark rippetoe's routine, it is a proven to work method.

good info relentless, and tell your friend eat well supplements are not necessary for the beginners, tell him not to read flex, musclemag and all the other mags, just read up on strength programs and eat lots of good natural food, ps- him saying he doesnt want to get too bulky shows how new he is, you dont get bulky unles you have the genetics for it and work your ass of year after year,i swear people must think two months in the gym and they will look like john cena if they over do it

I don't think he meant he would get too bulky straight away but he certainly does have the genetics for it. He's a big guy, not fat in the slightest and I've noticed his arms and shoulders have gotten alot bigger in the 4 months he's been doing it.

Thanks for the routine Relentless. Although he's insistant on going 6 days a week so he's be doing three different workouts twice a week.

why do 6 days a week, its been proven to be overkill for natural trainers, why not go 3 or 4 times get better results and have more free time?

Most people who want to work out six days a week do so because they think it's easy. Tell your friend to actually push himself and lift something heavy and see if he wants to go 6 times per week then.

Do most serious lifters not go 5 or 6 days a week?

This is his regime; Everything is done in 4 sets of 8 reps.

A- (Days 1 and 4) Chest and Triceps.

Bench Press with weight increasing after each set
    Dips
    Flies
    Skull Crushers
Incline Bench/Decline bench (alternate on different day)
    One arm tricep extensions

    B - Days 2 and 5 = Legs and back

    Squats
    Dead Lift
    Back raises
    Leg extension
    Calf raises

    C - days 3 and 6 - Shoulders and Biceps
    Wide grip pull ups
    narrow grip chin ups
    Barbell Curls
    Upright rows
    Military Press
    lateral raises

Thanks for the help. The guy hasn't had much guidance in making up the regime and seems to be just going along with it. It seems to me if your spending that much time then he may as well make it worth his while.

He does lift heavy weights. I've been through the regime with him a few times and most things are almost to failure. He's a student so he has alot of time on his hands hence him being able to go 6 days a week.

i am not a fan of split routines for natural trainers full body or upper lower split at most is optimal for the quickest results, i lift 3 days a week a 5x5 madcow program, i am exhausted after the sessions from the heavy compound exercises,

MIK 3 days is enough, if he really wnats to workout for 2 days tell him to do some HIIT or something.

Echo all of the above advice - lifting for 6 days straight is pointless, and could actually hinder his progress. The Rippetoe program above is perfect, the alternative to this would be the Starr 5x5. If he wants to hit it six days on the bounce, I would hit the weights Mon-Wed-Fri and do gpp and core work on the off days - he can even throw in the odd set of curls if that's his thing, but the basis of his program should follow the above advice.

Same, 5x5 is great IMO. I went from a month ago struggling to squat 95, to doing 140 last night with ease.

haha no and I think anyone who knows me on this forum will back me up. I'm an amateur boxer who with commitments to boxing training that wouldn't allow me to lift weights 6 days a week thanks. Although i can see how u came to this conclusion as I was using the popular "i have a friend who" cover up.
