hey, it is believed that a southpaw should watch out for the big right hand from the othodox fighter. imo that isnt too hard to do, the jab isnt much of a threat either if you know how to use your own jab and footwork/angles etc. i have two solutions for this punch...1. block it with your right hand. or evasion by ducking your body down to your left side. anyone have any defensive tips on fighting as a southpaw. anything to watch out for specifically?
I'd like to hear a few of these tips. I'd like to turn southpaw as my right handed jabs fine and my left hands more powerful, I just feel awkward in the stance though.
im planning on turning also, but before i turn i need to know all the common defensive moves for each punch. calzaghe is great to watch for this, especially his fight with kessler against a textbook fighter. if you watch this fight of calzaghe, you will realise how good he is and also he doesnt look close to being past his prime. im also watching hagler, valero and the pacman the priblem is at the moment i feel awakrd in this stance also tommy, i guess it takes time.
southpaw is truly effective when the front foot of th southpaw is on the outside, moving foward. if you move this way when southpaw you're moving away from the powerhand, thus has no power at all.
also remember that your own left hand is something that the orthodox fighter needs to watch out for. Parry his right hand with your own left. Like mentioned here before keep your front foot outside his. The Predator
ive been trying to pull some defencive moves (im southpaw) and find that shoulder rolls are just as effective...but you have to have alot of footwork to make the stance as awkward as possible. the danger hand for me anywyas is th eleft hook becuase your closer to it than the right and you cant see it coming as you would in an orthy position. use your shoulder and upperbody movment to shoulder parry the punch away and come back with left crosses.what makes the southpaw stance more effective is moving to your right with a good block so you dont get tagged with the left hook. some guys liek to move to there left like casamayor and find opening for his left hand but it back fires if he gets swarmed. most of the best defencive boxers ever are southpaws so you just need to be able to use upper body movement move to your rigth and be able to slip to your left. never square up. the further side on in your stance is the better chance of them not being able to catch you with a right hand i saw a guy in nottingham who was a southpaw who fought with an X block....very effective for a frotn foot southpaw
Yes, please block my right hand with yours so I can smack the **** out of you with my left hook for being so dumb.
Southpaws are usually Ok vs orthodox jabs, but are nailed by rights. There are few alternatives on defense for the southpaw: 1 ) Beat the other guy to the punch. 2 ) Circle away from the right hand and hope not to be caught by the hook 3 ) Slip, block, or duck, then counter. Not easy. I think it is best to duck/tilt/ lean toward the left hand side of the orthodox fighter. 4 ) Tuck you chin behind your shoulder, useful if you have the short beck and broad high shoulders. One problem many southpaws have is their right hand is usually under developed and weak. However converted southpaws dont have this problem as often.
Some coaches don't like southpaws. They are a tad harder to train because they do everything from the reverse angle.
good point for picking up on the over reserved myth that right hands are th emost dangerous punch for a southpaw. left hook due to the southy being closer to your left hand. body shots is another one...usually the kidney's and liver are exposed due how side on a fighter is
