Hi I just want some advice, I actually do mma but want to do boxing to help with the stand up. We do have local clubs near me but the best coach in our country said he will give me private lessons once a week, the problem is I will not be able to spar with him but he will do like mitts etc. with me. The big question is do you think I will benefit from this because it will be a 4 hour drive to the club and back home. Thanks
Lol, no I should have said I live in South Africa. That is why I wanted to hear your opinions about it, we have to make the best out of whats available but dont want to waste my time if I will not benefit from it.
I understand but will I benefit more with the better coach that is so far away or just go to one nearer to me. Will the benefit be that much better and worth all the extra money to go to that club. Thanks
Probably not worth it, I'd just go local as long as it's legit boxing training. Honestly though, I'm a complete noob so any advice I give you - take it with a pinch of salt. I'd advise you to post this in the training/amateur boxing section.
It depends how good the coaches are near you. is it 4 hours each way? Because that's insanity. If the trainers at the local gym near you are complete bafoons, then driving 2 hours each way (once a week) will be worth it, and then use the local gyms to spar people. But, this is just a portion of your MMA training, and if there are decent coaches near you, use them instead. You don't need the BEST boxing trainer to teach you. I already know, you don't have the BEST MMA trainer anyway....and that is the more important trainer for you. :deal
It's 2 hours each way. I'm just looking for any advantage I can get over the mma guys here. Thanks for the advice
There's a benefit to it for technique and speed. But honestly, I just don't think it's worth it. If you want good hands, you actually have to box. I think you can understand from an mma perspective how different hitting a bag, or grappling with a dummy are over real life. They help, but absolutely nothing compares to the real thing. Just think about how often you see someone hitting a bag, or mitts and they look like they have really solid technique, but in the ring they are total ****. No comparison. Pads are great for supplementing technique, but can NEVER replace actual ring work.
It would be nearly insane to make that drive daily ... but once a week for two-three weeks to see what you can learn would probably be worth it. If you find you don't get enough out of it, you can explain to the coach that the drive time is just too much. Or if you find out it's a big benefit, do it every other week or something.
If the boxing guy is, in fact, really good he will mess with your feet. The footwork required for good punches is very specific. That may affect your ability to transition to the footwork required for grappling and kicking.
mma in south africa is the biggest pile of **** ive ever seen. if you are im any way half decent you will destroy those guys. but if you want good training to really put you in another class, you have to do your training overseas. only way. look at how efc champions potts and mcclelan was embarrassed in the ufc - theres your answer
