Advice?

    What advice/opinions would you give to a 50 year-old boxing fan who wants to join his local boxing gym. I am a heavy smoker (stupid, I know) who is giving it up, a heavy drinker (stupid, I know) who wants to stop. I haven't done any sparring or serious exercise for 32 years! Should I get fit outside of the boxing club first, or just go along & start?

    The training will get you fit, just go along. If you have something preventing you from going then use that time for training until you can start.

    Thanks for that. So, you think I don't need to get myself up to a basic level of fitness first? I've heard boxing training is about the most demanding thing you can do. I don't want to drop dead of a heart attack! Although, according to my Doctor, I have the blood pressure of a 20-year-old. Maybe I should just, as the Nike ad says, Do It.

    stop smoking and drinking for starters. Go and see a doctor and get a medical done to make sure you wont have a heart attack. If the doctor says you are good to train then go for it. Dont worry about getting fit outside the gym first, the best way to get fit is by actually going to a boxing gym. Start of hitting the bag and pads and if you feel you want to spar have a go, if not just do boxing for fitness to have a healthier lifestyle.

    Thanks guys. It's time to let go of the destructive lifestyle and get fit. Boxing is the only thing I am interested in. I'll keep you posted of my progress.

    make sure you go to a boxing gym not one of those mma gyms that teaches boxing.

    at a boxing gym you hit the bag pads shadow box and spar if you want usually at your own pace or sometimes with a group.

    at the mma gym you do sit ups push ups jump squats and jump rope with minimal bag work and shadowboxing with a group at the trainers pace. infact most mma gyms ive been to seem to use their boxing class more as a warm up for their mma students then as an actual boxing class.

    plus their expensive they force you into a contract, once your in the contract they dont care about you only your money, and they dont understand that people have diffrent styles so they train all their students universally.

    I would recommend getting right into it when you're fit to train. Fitness people like to share knowledge, give criticism/praise to clean up a healthier lifestyle. You'll be right though a lot of smokers come into the gym doing what you're doing. You just need the committment to get through the hard part. Trust me its not easy but its worth it.

    Not everyone boxes to become the next Mayweather.

    You can have a drink and smoke the odd ciggie. Just not to excess.

    Start by sticking a few very light runs in and then get down there and join in on a class.

    It will be hard but no one will mind if you cant see it through.

    Its an amazing sport filled with great, genuine people. Enjoy.

    Somebody hates MMA for some reason... The guys 50, I doutb he's going to compete in boxing, it's the fitness he's after. That being the case there's nothing wrong with going to MMA style boxing lessons if thats what he wants or that is all thats available.

    more so the point was the guys 50 i dont think hes going to want to be running around doing high intensity circuts of jump squats sit ups and push ups.

    if one were to go to a normal boxing gym with no fitness lvl they would be fine if one were to go to a mma gym with even a moderate fitness lvl they're going to have a hard time and they're not going to enjoy it.

    You know this how? Intensity comes down to the individual.

    Why wouldn't they enjoy it? It's fitness, same as boxing. MMA isn't 3 times more intense on the fitness side.

    go ahead take a boxing class at an mma gym old dude if thats what there is to offer in your area....i hope you enjoy it.

    just remember:

    so dont try to keep pace with every one else.

    All I'll say is I've seen more than bloke in in their 30s or over who've come in for their first session, overweight, nervous as hell, and sweating all over the floor and having to stop for rests all the time.

    1-2 years later I see some of these guys looking pretty in-shape (for their age!), completing workouts that 20 year olds are dropping out from, and competing in the odd white collar/amateur event.

    Good luck mate. And cut out the smoking, that's for fools.
