    Hi guys,

after being a big boxing fan for a while I went to the gym of my university last year. The trainer is quite "old-fashioned", but as I´ve always been somehow a quite humble and shy kid I thought he might help me to get a bit more rough. However, in the first training session he was teaching about blocking and was not happy the way I was doing it.

He told to me to keep my guard up and suddenly threw a right hand (would call it medium hard) at me which caught me a little below my nose. I thought WTF? I mean I was all right, didn´t hurt much but he wasn´t wearing gloves and I didn´t wear a mouthguard (which he knew). So do you think this guy is trainer u should have trust in ? Actually I was a little confused ...:huh Because I had to finish some exams, I haven´t been there for a while but I want to resume boxing. The question is: Should I go somewhere else?

I have just been doing very light sparring (we just should jab each other to the body / head ) and had fun doing it. But I was very very afraid of getting hit ... Are there any advices in order to lose this fear ? Just keep doing it ?

Thanks for your help guys! :hi:

You asking if you should go back to the gym where the trainer punched you in the face? Answer this: how did he tell you to block it?

He obviously wanted to punch in my glove (whatever sense it has) but as he didnt wear gloves the punch wasnt / couldnt be blocked completely ( just slowed down ). So u agree this guy is nuts?

In the 1980s my friend was trained by former bantam contender Alberto Sandoval. They'd be in the ring and Sandoval would call him over. My friend would walk up to him and Sandoval would slap him upside the head and tell him that once you get in the ring you keep your hands up at all times. Everybody has lessons to impart and their own way of doing it.

Basically, he showed me how to do a "double guard". After that, we (a partner and I) were told to jap each other in a way that we could catch the others shot with the glove being placed next to the chin.

Yes, he punched me to show me how to block it. I just thought it was a bit risky to do this with quite a heavy shot, no gloves and moreover without a mouthpiece. So my basic concern is that he doesn´t worry enough about protection ...

How about my second question (fear of getting hit) ?

Thanks so far for your replies :good

You should always be a bit afraid of getting hit; it hurts and it costs you points, but you can't let that fear interfere with what you are trying to do. You'll get used to punches coming at you, over time, and getting clocked a couple times will eliminate the fear of the unknown.
