Yes he was 3-2 against the Cuban, Orlando Martinez. Martinez beat Alfonso Zamora 5-0 in the final. George was a lovely boxer but had a constant battle with the scales. He lost to Jim Watt at lightweight and i saw him beat former british Lightwelterweight champ Joey Singleton at the Liverpool Stadium.

Did George ever fight in the Commonwealth Games..?

As and American, I was never more happy than watching
Jim Watt pound Howard Davis Jr.

Too bad about 1976, would have liked to see Ayub Kalule vs Ray Leonard.
Ayub Kalule was the favorite to win the Gold Medal at Light Welterweight (63.5 KG / 140 lbs.)

Titan, I can tell you I did. Vilomar Fernandez was flagrantly robbed of the decision in the match which got Howard to Glasgow, and I was getting sick of every title shot by a US Olympian turning into a predetermined formal coronation. Jim was getting disparaged by the American boxing press simply for not being Duran. As far as I'm concerned, Watt was the best lightweight in the world between Duran and Arguello, regardless of whether or not American publications rated him second to whoever the WBA representative happened to be. (Arguello also knew Watt was the top man at 135, or else he would have challenged for the WBA Title instead.)

In the 1976 Olympics, Yukio Segawa floored Howard Davis Jr. 'twice', and
    guess who got the decision.

    Disgraceful...

On Jim Watt versus Davis. Jim took his heart away after 5 rounds.
The New York Daily News ripped Howard Davis Jr. for fightling like a 'scaredy cat'.

How were knock downs scored (if they were scored at all) in amateur boxing at the time of the 1976 Olympics? Actually, I don't know anything about amateur boxing other than what we have now.

    di tullio,,,,,,,,You're a Gold Medal Winner,,,,,,,,,,:good:good

The 'knockdowns' were scored as nothing more than a good punch.

I'll never forget the look on Japan's Yukio Segawa's face, after flooring Howard Davis Jr. twice, in '2'
different rounds, and chasing him around the ring in Round 3, while Davis would flick out a weak jab
    and retreat.
Then not getting the deserved decision.

Plenty of interesting stuff on here, like Adrian Diaconu's win over Sergio Martinez in 1997 at the World Championships.

And Kenty unseated Duran's WBA successor Ernesto Espana, who looked lethal in getting off the floor to fracture Johnny Lira's jaw with his left hook in what shockingly was his only successful defense. (Lira was something of an interesting character, actually working as a trainer himself during his competitive career.) I do in fact consider Watt to have been superior to Espana and O'Grady as well as Kenty. I regard him as the world's best lightweight between Duran and Arguello, regardless of any American boxing publications which typically rated him number two.
