Calzaghe certainly has the advantage as far adaptability, but he wins on dominating his opponents with punch output and the ability to fight at top form into the 12th round. Pavlik has those same strenghs, but is also much younger, taller, and with an obvious power advantage. Plus, if Calzaghe wins, he beats a MW. If he loses, he loses to a MW. That's a big-risk, low-reward scenario for Calzaghe, though I'm sure he'd have no reservations fighting Pavlik.

I don't want to see him fight Calzaghe, purely because he's too big a risk (though I think JC would win). I would hate to see Calzaghe lose to someone as flawed as Pavlik. I would rather him have lost to Hopkins. I personally think Calzaghe should quit after Jones.

Agree with the others on here though about Abraham. If he beats Miranda then that's the fight that should be made. Beat Abraham, then consider moving up as there's noone else about.

Why does Abraham fight Miranda? Because Sauerland thinks that Miranda deservers a rematch? Because he gets more money in the US than in Germany? No, Sir. He fights Miranda to get exposure in the US and get a shot at Pavlik.

    Problem I:

Because of ODLH-contender hype and Hopkins-Calzaghe, HBO's budget will be busted very soon. As Pavlik-Abraham is no PPV fight this fight can't be made this year. HBO said they want Pavlik-Abraham for next year.

Of course, Abraham needs a dominant victory against Miranda. Not an easy task.

    Problem II:

Pavlik can make much more money against other boxers like Calzaghe, a still good hasbeen (Jones, ...) or even against a hasbeen who's shot to pieces (TRINIDAD).

    ( 3rd fight 2008 ) Rubio
( 4th fight 2008 ) Calzaghe ( Wright or Duddy or Lorenzo if Calzaghe chickens )
    ( 1st fight 2009 ) Winner of Miranda / Abraham

The only thing that could stop the Rubio fight is a loss to Lockett or if Calzaghe wants to fight in September-October.

Most likely Calzaghe will want to fight in November. Pavlik I see taking the fight as this really would be his only opportunity before Joe retires. As for Joe it depends if he wants to take an easier fight against Jones ( nothing against the guy but he ain't the fighter he used to be ) or one with the bigger legacy against Pavlik.

And finally the winner of Miranda / Abraham in 2009. ( Though if Pavlik scores an upset and beats Joe, Abraham might be reconsidering )

i think all pavlik is concerned with at moment is beating lockett.
any great champion should never underestimate their opponent and should take one fight at a time. those words were also said by the great evander holyfield!!!!

anyway if he wins it has to be calzaghe!!!!!

Bob Arum already outlined his plans for Pavlik.

    June 08: Lockett
    Fall 08: Rubio
    January 09: Abraham
    Next fight at 168.

The only thing that would upset that would be Abraham losing to Miranda, or Rubio losing to some ham-n-egger, or looking bad against one like Duddy did. If Miranda beats Abraham, Arum will probably change his plans. In spite of all Joe's bluster I doubt if he will ever fight Pavlik. He seems to be very concerned about retiring undefeated, and he knows full well Pavlik would make that impossible. Joe will most likely be ringside for Pavlik/Lockett. After Pavlik destroys Lockett I doubt if Joe will ever mention Kelly again.

No doubt that Miranda wants Pavlik again, but P2K seems to think Pantera needs 2 more wins before he gets that shot. And assuming Kelly moves up. Edison can't make 160.
