That was the impression I got going into the Ioka fight. I thought Ioka would have had a field day with timing and countering Martinez but instead he got overwhelmed and beat. If Martinez is able to beat a solid fighter like Ioka I think he has a good chance at giving Bam a tough fight.

Vic, you named some outstanding fighters there that I missed such as Palma, Ballas and especially Fernandez. But, not to start another Fitzsimmons debate with is he a Brit or an Aussie or a Yank, but I really never got the Federico Thompson thing. I know the predominance of his career was in Argentina, but he was born in Panama, fought his first 5 years as a pro in Panama (don't know if he had any amateur laurels to speak of), and was Panamanian lightweight champ. It's hard, for me anyway, to negotiate the jump that he was Argentine, despite eventually gaining Argentine citizenship. What say you on the matter?

Thompson considered himself argentinian and argentinians considered him argentinian. He improved his boxing greatly only in there, with Oscar Casanovas, a former olympic gold medal for Argentina and the first trainer of Victor Galindez (Thompson was often in the corner for Galindez in his first fights).
I read people saying his win (Thompson´s) over Don Jordan was the biggest in Luna Park history... since those fights were not televised (as far as I know) he made his fame and career in Argentina, I think panamanians didn´t follow his career live..

It´s similar to the case of José Napoles and Mexico.

You bring up a good case of the Cubans who fled Cuba after Castro came in. You had a group (Napoles, Sugar Ramos) headed to Mexico, another group (Paret, Issac Logart) headed to New York, another group (Luis Rodriguez, Doug Vaillant) to Florida and still another group (Jose Legra, Angel Robinson Garcia) off to Europe. But I always heard them referred to as 'The Cuban', not the Spaniard or the Mexican or the New Yorker. I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

You´re right. But there is quotes where Thompson calls himself argentine. And I thought it was important to bring up the fact that he becomes a great boxer under the teachings of a argentine coach.

Locche is the 3rd greatest Argentinan boxer imo, behind Monzon and Perez.

Ballas and Luasse are my favourites. But yeah Laciar deserves a shout for 3rd place. Interestingly, Ballas beat Laciar in a 10 rounder.

Keep in mind that Locche being ranked high is something that happened after his retirement. He was not well liked when he was active, in Argentina. Not that it matters, we are speaking our minds here... just that it can be revisionism, to some extent, his high ranking..

Curious where people would rank Marcos Maidana and Lucas Matthysse at amongst the best Argentinian boxers. They gave some really memorable fights.

Maidana, to me, among the top 10 is fine.

I don´t know about Matthysse, in the same tier I have Jorge Castro, maybe...

Somebody mentioned Vasquez, I believe it was Seamus, and he looks underrated now reading the mentions...
