these are some pretty poor ideas.

Put all the fights at one venue? Yea, let's just forget about the gate because that means nothing to the fighters pocketbooks, right? Froch Kessler at the MGM Grand, what would that have drawn?

3 fights on every card? At the same venue? Again, let's just forget about gate revenue in your book, eh? How much do you think Showtime paid for each fight? Not enough to make it possible without a gate.

Setting predetermined dates for fights a year or more in advance? This is boxing, not the Super Bowl. As we've seen in this tournament, there are extenuating circumstances in this sport that make that an impossibility.

They sold the S-6 to us as an event: A tournament with tournament rules that would produce an undisputed champ at 168.

They produced a series of fights over a period of years that will still leave many questions unanswered.

We've seen a few good fights along the way, but some of these match ups actually got in the way of better fights that probably would have happened.

As an amateur boxer and wrestler I was involved in plenty of tournaments. You don't get to make excuses. You make the event or forfeit.

This thing could have been a huge event in Vegas that the entire boxing world would have turned out for. That would have been a hell of a lot better than a series of seemingly random fights scattered all over the world.

 at the Euros laying the bitching groundwork for when Ward whoops Froch worse than he did Kessler.

    Great thread!

I have a question for everyone: When they replaced Green with Glen Johnson, was there ever any chance that Bute would have been the sub instead?

I'm not a Bute fan at all, and I'm thrilled that GJ got a chance for some end-of-career glory, but it seems to me that Bute was the better choice. Am I wrong?

We have the top two guys fighting each other. The winner is clearly the king and the champion.

That man can further his legacy by defending against the likes of bute, dirrell, kessler.

If either man follows that path it's pretty much beyond dispute they would be the greatest smw of all time.

I can't believe that after ten fights pitting the best against each other with bute on the sideline racking up ko victories against less than stellar, but good enough to keep him in mention, opposition.

This is one of the best things to happen to boxing recently. The winner will be wba, wbc, ring champion with a fantastic resume and huge fights lined up, how can anyone complain?

I'm sure bute prefers this route of least resistance because people will be screaming for the new champ to unify against him, all the while he's been racking up the dollars against easy opposition.

Ward versus Froch should be a great match-up.

Maybe his promoter prefers that route but Bute, like about all professional boxers, is a proud man and would have loved to be in it.

I agree on all the rest of your post.

the tourney has been a success in my mind and yes Bute needs to get his ass in line to fight the winner of the super six, at least a fight with Abraham or something.

judging and hometown issues seemed to plague it.

it won't be an issue when its in Vegas.

Abraham/Green/Dirrell - all went down in profile
Taylor - told us he's done
Glen Johnson - got a nice KO win against Green
Kessler - about the same I guess
Ward/Froch - everyone thinks more of them

There were consequences to the fights. That's what everyone should want right. Instead of having a bunch of people on a message board b*tching over who is better as they all avoid one another, fight stiffs, and there was never a fight to settle the dispute we actually had fights between all of the above. What a concept. As far as Bute, he has to fight some of the above at some point. The only other guys in the division worth talking about after the above and Bute are Sakio Bika and Pavlik I suppose. If he's under contract to Showtime, they're going to match him with the Ward/Froch winner almost certainly. Bute by himself isn't worth anything to Showtime, he's just a nameless beltholder of which there's a hundred in boxing. A unified boxing champion is worth a whole lot more though since right now there's only a couple of them in the boxing world.

When I read people saying that Bute is not to be consider a top fighter in the division and should be regarded below "any of the s6 guys" I think that what the tournament has created, is a lot of hype around it.

I agree with Boom_boom though. That tournament made us discover that incredible boxer which is Ward. Ward and Bute, regardless of the opposition, are the two best IMO.

    I'm a Bute fan.

It's always unfortunate when someone says anything negative about this tournament. It's better than the usual route where promoters hand pick their opponents until a big fight comes up. You can't even fault the route Bute is going, because it's pretty much what all fighters do. This tournament forced these guys to fight each other. After this tournament, these guys will go back to carefully picking their opponents. Look at Kessler. He's doing the same crap again. Can't believe yall have the audacity to complain about this tournament. It made top guys fight each other. Look at 140. Would have been better off with a super 6. It could take 5 years for all i care atleast we get to see fights
