True, but I got to respect it though. The guy has balls and thats what is sometimes missing in boxing. Mosley did this twice. Lost against both Winky Wright and Vernon Forrest and took the immediate remach on both, and lost both. Mosley is a very competative guy. We still don't know if Jermain will lose the rematch though.
Despite the telegram, he landed a few of those on Pavlik...which doesn't say much about his defense. Thats why I still give JT a shot. He held his own offensively and landed shots, but he just got hit more, especially with power shots. If he improves his defense he will beat Kelly.
You make adjustments to do better. If he would have thrown more to the body and threw a variation of punches, he could have landed more and perhaps taken out JT sooner. Part of the reason why JT was able to counter Pavlik 30% is because he knew what to expect.
I couldn't find any other term without wanting to offend him or his supporters... But what can you say when he was having incredible success in the middle of the ring against Winky and Manny would tell him to stay there, clinch or whatever, and he would instinctively row back into the damn corner? He also has taken some shots like that right from Hops at the end of the 9th round - JT had tasted that right hand but still was on the backpedal, hands down and at punch range when Bernard blasted him on the temple ( 30 seconds to go in round 9 or something)... He took that first left-right hand from Kelly in round 7 and still was sticking his chin and jabbing like nothing happened, took another jab that removed his guard out of the way and took another right hand AND STILL WAS JABBING AWAY with his body turning... JT is not very intelligent to say the least.
How about the Spinks fight where he just didn't throw for some odd reason. Emanuel told him that all he had to do was let it go. And he didn't have to worry about getting hit as Spinks didn't have any pop to even hurt him. Another example of JT's simple minded nature (as you said, putting it nicely as not to offend his fans). :happy
Just to add on top of what Bachatu said, Kelly was losing major rounds up until the stoppage. Bar the KO, Taylor was clearly controlling that fight. So if we're going by what your definition of 'woking' is, Kelly would have to give up rounds and pray that his basic 1-2's are going to take Taylor out again. But with a prepared Taylor this time, I think it won't. It would be downright stupid on Kelly's part to insist on his one-dimensionality just because it worked the first time.
I understand the concept. The point is, when you are in a fight the risk of going away from what is working can be too great, at least in the mind of the fighter. KP insists his defense is under rated and he isn't getting caught by as many blows as people seem to think. Someone mentioned that JT kept turning from the jab instead of slipping it. You keep letting him do that. Let him get comfortable doing that. And if you feel you are giving better than you are getting, work that angle until it doesn't work. But, I think it set up the end.
No. Prior to the stoppage I only gave Kelly 2 rounds, and in one of those I was debating myself heavily if he truly merited it.
Kelly threw 80 punches and landed 44 in the first round, almost doubled Taylor's output. Took control back again in round 3 and had a good round 6... There was not much between them in rounds 4 and 5 either.
Well, he was correct, at least in terms of the judges score cards. To many people, these judges included, don't seem to know what a FIGHT is. Let's paint the white squares on the front of 24 ounces of foam rubber gloves.....
I remember Lederman sayin that all Spinks did was shuffle in and straighten back, shuffle in and straighten back in circles, and Larry sayin that he would prefer to see a debate between Obama and Hillary... And one guy gave it 117-111 to Spinks. I guess Jermain didn't want to look bad and possibly the Mayweather-Hoya fight was in his mind ( took place a couple of weeks before), then he had his mind on Miranda and Pantera had his mind on Jermain, even as Spinks was dancing freestyle around him and Kelly was loading up on Edison.
I'm one of those folks that don't get cable. I found this site looking for round by round. I watched the comments here and on the unofficial score on the HBO site. The HBO site had it 6-0! When I saw reply finally ..... GEEZ. :rofl
