Ask any nuthugger why Oscar deserves the Hall of Fame even after having lost 6 fights in the past 8 yearsand most will say "look at all his titles. No one has ever done that!"Maybe so. But most were a gimme. 3 WBO titles and 3 IBA titles are in the mix. Beating guys like Brdhal and little 5' 4" Paez with a 63" reach are in there. Castillego is in there, the guy who was brutalized twice by that French bum Bourdillo before he lost his so-called title to Oscar. Hell he had never even fought outsie of Spain. Oscar lost almost all of his mega fignts. He was beaten badly by guys like Sturm and showed cowardice in the fight with Trinidad. He looked like a class c fighter when he fought Forbes. And now again he fights a top fighter in Pac and of course loses. He can not win the big one. The ending in the Hopkins fight was bizarre to say the least. A very good fighter ..... yes. A hall of Famer .... No. You have to win the big ones to get there. And Oscar just couldn't quite do that.
depends on how many fighters you put in the hall of fame, if its one every year it could be a tough call.
No he is not an ATG. A few years ago Ring Magazine had him #77 ATG in the top 100 list. But after losing 5 fights since that rating there is no way he can even be on the list now. Well ..... Oscar does own Ring now so who knows.
Sure fire HOFer. Not even up for discussion lol. ATG, you could make a case, but it wouldnt be a good one. He was competitive with the best this sport has produced over the last 10 years, whether you think he deserved some decisions or not. Thats ATG material I think.
What are your thoughts on Hearns? Geergrove brought up an excellent point. Most of what you say about Oscar can be said about hearns as well he lost or came up with a draw in all his biggest fights and his best wins (name wise) are against guys either past their prime above their best weight or both.
He's easily a HOF'er, but I'd agree that he's not really an ATG. The fight with Pacquiao was embarassing, but it really doesn't do much to diminish his standing in his prime, where he was clearly on of the best in the world and proved it often, even in losing performances. He never really proved himself to be above any of the elite the class though, despite the fact that he fought them all and accomplished more than the rest of the pack. What's really stained his legacy has been the bull**** he's been pulling for the past 5-8 years, where's he's turned into a part time, cherry-picking, money-grubbing hack rather than a true boxer, and it finally bit him in the ass on Saturday.
Agreed. Oscar proved to be a HOF fighter by the time he moved up to 147. Everything after is icing on the cake (maybe moldy icing). I just wish the HOF was more selective.
