against who (atg) would you favor marciano to beat?

John L. Sullivan: Depends on the rules, Marciano´s, Marciano UD, Sullivan´s, Sullivan by KO somewhere past round 20

Bob Fitzsimmons: I think Fitz has a serious chance of drawing Marciano in, hurting him and finish him, remember Sailor Tom Sharkey? However, most of the time Marciano wins.

jim jefries: depends on the ruleset. Marciano´s, Marciano by UD due to his higher workerate. Jeffs, Jeffries by late stoppage, somewhere beyond round 20.

jack johnson: Pick´em. Johnson may spoil Marciano to a boring UD or Marciano may outwork him to a decision. Johnson´s rules, it´s Johnson by stoppage.

Sam Langford: Langford could finish him of, awesome offensive fighter, however against Marciano his lackluster defense is a big liability. McVey who was also a pressure fighter but more limited than Marcianowas able to take it to Langford. I think Rocky could too. And would.

Harry Wills: Won´t judge, lack of footage for this.

jack dempsey: Dempsey at his best has a serious chance to knock Rocky out early. I think I stick with that.

Max Schmeling: Marciano by KO late

joe louis: Louis TKO in the midrounds

floyd patterson: Marciano midround KO

sonny liston: Liston by late round TKO

Muhammad Ali: 60s Ali loses, 70s Ali wins. I think 60s Ali was too fragile and vulnerable and he wouldn´t be able to avoid Marciano for 15 rounds. 70s Ali had the toughness and durability, the will to do anything to win. He would clinch a lot, frustrate the hell out of Marciano, a bit like Ali-Frazier II.

Anyone from John Sullivan to Jimmy Braddock,with the possible exception of Jack Johnson. Charles,Walcott (whom we already know about) Patterson,Johansson,Spinks L & M,Douglas,and Rahman.

I think he can beat Frazier and Foreman. Marciano is more two-fisted than Frazier, has more power I think and is slightly more durable. I think Marciano can get too Frazier late, hurting him and TKOing him. With Foreman is the thing that I don´t know if MArciano can take Foreman´s punches. If he can´t it Foreman early. If he can, he drags Foreman into deep water, tiring him and stops him in the midround. I give him the benefit of the doubt.

 

Taking each name in turn.

Looking at the way that Tom Sharkey was able to neutralize Corbetts boxing ability with pressure I have to favour Marciano.

Tough call and probably depends on the distance as well as the tactics Jeffries uses. I would tend to say Marciano in a shorter fight and Jeffries in a longer fight.

I have been reading a lot of acounts of Johnson vs pressure fighters recently and I think he had issues with them. For this reason I am saying Marciano.

Dempsey was faster off the starting blocks and this would probably be decisive.

Marciano exceled against technical boxers and would probably break Tunney down just like he did Walcott Charles LaStarza etc.

Louis probably bludgeons his brains out coming in.

Liston probably bludgeons his brains out coming in.

Foreman probably bludgeons his brains out coming in.

A close fight, but Marcianos two fisted attack, right hand and better chin probably carry the day.

Holmes can't keep Marciano off him and sucumbs late.

Marciano outworks and batters Holyfield for a late tko.

Tyson was faster off the starting blocks and this would probably be decisive.

Hard to pick. Call it a 50/50 type fight.

Marciano's power cracks Floyds chin sooner or later.

Bowes porous defence and habit of fighting on the inside play into Marcianos hands.

 

Johnson is a hard pick and I have somtimes favoured him over Marciano.

Recently I have been reading acounts of his fights with Marvin Hart and Sam Langford, who both seem to have taken his game away to some extent and given him problems.

That has to be weighed against his sucess vs the smaller Burns and less agresive McVea.
