I don't think he should continue to move down in weight, but I think he can still perform at the top level.
What reason is the for JCC Jr not to fight him? You've just said that JCC Jr is a star, so money / crowd numbers etc shouldn't be a problem, because JCC Jr will bring his fan base, correct? I see no reason not to make the fight other than Jr's team wants no part of Sergio.
Chavez junior is being saved for Pavlik to fight after two tune up fights. Makes a lot more sense for a top rank boxer like Pavlik to fight Chavez.
why doesnt he call out Hopkins instead of ChavezJr? Really? Canelo, Cotto and Jr are all more then fair fights for Martinez. More then fair. The guy is 37, worked his way up the p4p rankings and has become a multi weight champion the hard way (ala, not given his **** and protected ala canelo and jr), he has very little left at or near his best, he wants the big fights with those considered the best at 154 (his previous weight) and 160 (his current weight) Big deal. Canelo, Cotto, Chavezjr are all fair game and should man up to fight Martinez. Not sure why Martinez would abandon fights with fellow title holders at his previous weight (and the weight he is going back to) (cotto, canelo) or the weight hes at (Chavez) and go chase after Hopkins.
Interesting scenario, but isn't that making the rather large assumption Pavlik can make MW though? His comeback fight is at a catch of 170, isn't it? Would love to see a roaring Pavlik comeback, by the way.
Thats what I heard is Bob Arums plan for Pavlik. If he can't make 160 I heard they will just fight at 164 or something which I am sure would not hurt Chavez feelings to much. Makes more sense for Pavlik a top rank fighter to get a big fight and exspose Chavez then someone like Martinez. Maybe the winner will fight Martinez next year or something.
I would assume he'll be more competitive than Barker was. Macklin doesn't posses the educated Jab of Barker, but he will be much more willing to impose his size on Martinez. I don't think it was Barkers skill which bothered Martinez as much as his size. It's no coincidence that Martinez's toughest fight since Pavlik was against the next true MW that he faced. Macklin will lose a UD in my estimation, but he will have success in trapping Sergio and landing some heavy punches, it will be entertaining, I can promise you that.
To all those who responded to me I'm just saying he is facing the pwill problem problem and if he is willing to call out 147 for the big money fights he should be willing to call out 168 175 as well..can call out2 down but not 2 up? Just saying.. if 147 is a stretch then I agree so is 175.. but if 154 is okay move into the mix at 168.. someone is bound to catch... Martinez jcc Jr is ready to happen.. and jcc Jr possess the skills and chin and size needed to defeat Martinez so I really want that fight anyways just calling it how it is boxings a business not that I agree with it but its reality and I just acknowledge ...
