Berbick was a good fighter. Any observations about concerning this fight? http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=[yt]_MY3RtJUrD8[/yt] At about 2.30 on the video's clock, Tyson dumps a Berbick left and counters with a short hook of his own. Breathtaking boxing, look for it. It actually facilitates Tyson's best punching of the fight, right at the end of round 1. The lead right Mike lands at the beginning of round one is a monster shot, allbeit thrown against a hurt opponent. Great punch. That's Berbick basically done, though he shows amazing heart and chin to fight on, Tyson starts riffing.
Man, I just watched it again, and Tyson is an absolutley unique puncher. He might be a better puncher than Louis. Louis is more consistant though. It is so close between them for punching.
I don't know if you can pin that on him exactly...because Berbick tended to have pretty whacked-out theories about a lot of stuff in his life, let alone wins and losses in boxing. I wouldn't blame a big ego refusing to accept a loss, more like general paranoia and being a bit spaced-out.
Although that is obviously BS, I do feel for a fighter in this situation. None of us that post here can know what it is like to get into the ring at this level, world-title level against the very very best, but I imagine you tell youself certain lies to shore up your ego and get the job done. SO to find yourself in with a guy who is literally - literally, two levels above you must come as quite a shock. Berbick could fight Tyson 100 times and never win one, unless Tyson threw his back or a knee, you can imagine how hard that would be to bear had you been the champion of the world. I guess his mind just never recovered from being so thorughly owned at the thing he was meant to excel at.
Great highlight clip - Thanks McGrain! Tyson was a beast - a freak of nature at 220. I dont think we'll ever see a fighter with that much speed and power combination in the HW division in our lifetime.
A ferocious combination of speed, power, and the lust for blood. Tysons peak was only a couple of years, but he was an awesome force.
Actually, his peak was during the last 21 seconds of the 5th round against Tyrell Biggs. All downhill after that.
