Pastrano, Ali, Ellis and Sugar Ray Leonard were examples of good managed careers and as a cornerman was key in some of their victories or in the case of Ellis retiring him on the stool vs Frazier. Ellis got a portion of a the heavyweight crown when he was fighting as a middleweight a couple of years ago.

As a trainer, he was known to show up in fight camp during the last 3 weeks to polish things up.

Leonard and Ali were generational talents and could have succeeded without Dundee but Dundee managed them really well regarding matchmaking and making them active with the right opponents.

So do you agree that he was a better manager/matchmaker and key to have in your cornerman than an outright trainer?

    Or Disagree?

Dundee was just a sports journalist who was around boxing and got a big break from Ali, he picked up a few things in gyms here and there, D`Amato spotted flaws in Ali`ssparring in prep for his first fight against Frazier but Dundee told D`Amato it didn`t matter that Ali looked slow and was getting caught so much, Dundee was living in hindsight, jusyt happy to be part of the greatest show on earth, he was in awe of what was going on around him.

I dare anyone to watch him with Pinklon Thomas in the corner during the Tyson fight and not think he was a great cornerman, at least. And by great I mean hilarious.

I agree, though that's not to say he was a bad trainer by any means. Still an all time great one.

My friend Arthur always mentioned this fight and said Angelo said to Pinklon " your nothing" something like that. I told him, no he was sort of telling him to be quiet and the your nothing was part of dismissing what he was saying.

I think he was iconic. He inspired fighters. I don't think he was the greatest technical guy, but he was great psychologically for a corner. Emanuel Steward was more a technical guy and devised a plan.

It's a taboo subject LOL! Another guy I was blessed to talk with and hear him say it to my face- Cassius was winning so you dont fix it if aint broke.

I walked away thinking I just heard a slogan, not words of wisdom. I think...I asked him why Ali post 1970 didnt go to the body. When he responded as such, I felt no need to ask him how he felt about Ali laying on the ropes as a means of defense. Even Ali said himself (he) came up with that in Kinshasa because of the humidity preceding the monsoon by minutes. Rope-a-dope. Now it makes me kinda want to review more in between rounds to see what instructions Angelo actually gave for adjustments....cause I cant think of anytime Ali really adjusted to anyone's success of hitting him (post 1970).

I agree. Actually dundee was not the key of nothing. Ali and Leonard would have been great without angelo. Trevor berbick and pinklon Thomas got destroyed by Tyson.

Thanks, Ali did throw jabs to Williams and Bugner`s body though, however it`s wasn`t Dundee`s idea for him to do that, the only decent thing I`ve heard Dundee say in a corner was to Michael Nunn v Toney, he told him to follow up his jab with a straight left to stop Toney countering the jab, pretty basic 1-2 really and Nunn didn`t listen anyway.

Angelo Dundee was a great trainer.
He was also a great cornerman, manager, matchmaker and a cut-man.

He wasn't a pretentious or eccentric person though. So his greatness as a trainer has become doubted by some.
He was just a great boxing trainer and got on with it.

True. You went against the grain here, but your points are valid. A bit detailed, while those defending him are some what vague in what made him great.

Oh and Round 14 Ray Leonard vs Hearns
"Ya blowin it kid...this is where we separate the boys from the men ya blowin it"

Didn't sound like an adjustment, rather admonishment, but hey...it worked!

I think Dundee was a legendary all round boxing guy. Very very smart guy, could think on his feet, always learning, always listening and knew how to delegate everything perfectly and he was great with the press. Had a lot of important contacts. I cannot think of anyone individual who would be more beneficial to any fighter as an overall package. On top of this He had his older brother Chris as a kind of silent consigliere behind the scenes, and that guy new everything too.

    Here's one for you.
Do you know who trained Ali as an amateur, who was his trainer when he won the gold medal?
    Chuck Bodak.
You may remember him as the cut man for Jorge Paez that would put black tape on his bald head to replicate Paez's hair style.
