    Neither. Or, both, kind of.

    None of them are painful - but if you keep lightly chiseling a stone over time it will bore a hole.

    Likewise, technically any touch of the gloves on a legal scoring area is supposed to count in a judge's mind - but obviously light body taps are given least priority (even grazing jabs count more)

    Primarily a psychological thing. ("I can stay busy even while you're looking for a rest" - same reason guys stand in the corner during minute breaks instead of sitting on their stool)
