Kunkabavev fought well. He wasn't going to win on the outside, so he went after Jalolov and made a good showing in defeat. Any result but gold would be a really bad look for Jarolov. Jarolov KO over Richard Torrez got a little scary as Torrez left the ring in a stretcher. Check out the knock out.

As for Jarolov himself, he looked very confident more aggressive. Still needs work on defense and the transition game at mid range. The semi and final match for him were better than any pro he's fighting next.

The event didn't have Viktor Vykhryst as Ukraine boycotted the event. IMO he's still the best amateur super heavy. I was hoping to see the the young russian jr world champion ( Forget has name ) right now. Guess he was still too young.

i didn't watch this time like in 2017 but the heavyweight divison has me confused.. levit and savon losing to guys I never heard of before.. then Clarke getting screwed in a corrupt decision by the judges... did levit and savon get screwed on the cards also? to make it easier for that 23 year old Russian to avoid them and win gold or did they lose legit?

It was a good final - both guys were very willing. The Uzbek has beaten the bloke from Kazakhstan three times in a row now. He appeared to hurt him in the final when he landed that southpaw left.

I haven't seen the Ukrainian or the young Russian. The Andy Ruiz lookalike Russian who took bronze here might take some beating for the Olympic spot.

The guy I want to see take gold in Tokyo is Justis Huni. He was apparently sick all week so they pulled him out of the semi-final. Three fights in three days was enough for the young bloke.

We should see Justis in with one of the big guns at the Asia & Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament. Look forward to seeing that.

Weird....there was some Ukrainian former kickboxer fighting at SHW, but he was the only one in the whole tournament I think. I was hoping to see Dronov as well, hopefully he’ll be in the Olympics next year. Overall I was very impressed with the young guns(Torrez and Huni), I wouldn’t be surprised at all if see a world or Olympic final between them somewhere down the line.

Levit's star is on the decline. He was a speed guy.

At super heavy Clarke I read was screwed. There was no Ukraine ( Vykhryst ), most of the best talent went pro after the Olympics, and there was a pro in the midst which should not be allowed.

Would be interesting to see an Australian HW make some waves. Dempsey McKean is at 16-0 now too.
I've tried to find stats on Huni but haven't found his height details. Just on Kunkabavev ... he's Huni's only am loss to date I think.

Think Jalalov could be a major threat at HW in the next couple of years, but he needs to focus on the "pros"

I don't think Justis Huni has ever faced the guy from Kazakhstan inside a boxing ring.

The L that's showing on his amateur record is a walkover result as a consequence of him withdrawing from this tournament with illness after qualifying for the semis.

Juppity is reporting on the Stifler's Mum thread that Justis Huni has never been defeated inside the ring in international competition.

I think he beats the Kazakh when he faces him. I wouldn't be rushing him into a fight with the Big Boy from Uzbekistan though. He's packing serious power that only a very good chin will diffuse.

Wish him all the best but McKean won't be soaring to any great heights.

Did you catch the Clarke fight with the Russian Snickers man yet Mendoza??

The actual fight itself could have easily gone to the Russian, that's no problem. But very tough on the young Englishman to take the win away from him. It's not like the Ruski dominated from bell to bell. He arguably deserved the nod anyway but I feel it was harsh to overturn it and feel it might have been politically motivated. Like the Russians leant on the AIBA heavily to get it overtured.

I also thought Babanin won but it was way too close to warrant it beating overturned. There’s 5 judges there for a reason. There were plenty of fights there that were as narrow as that one and it was the only one that was overturned. Pretty clear what happened.

he's injured. US also has Marc Castro at the weight. Castro very awkward and was junior and youth world champion, but is hiding out in preparation for olympics.

Khalil Coe, who knocked out La Cruz, didn't make it because he lost to Atif Oberlton in the nationals. Same for Troy Isley at middleweight. Jared Anderson, a promising 91Kg for USA didn't go because he is evidently going pro.
