Yes there is a type of duty of care by corner, ref and doctor, and i repeat one of those should have called halt to contest earlier, but likewise if we bring phrase duty of care into it, then there needs to be set in stone rules laid down by the authorities that decisions are based on.

Opinions of ref (employee of the promoter) or the corner (employees of the boxer) regarding stopping are just that opinions, albeit informed ones.

But the one expert, independent, professionally qualified person is the Dr, yes they are employees, but they have one role/focus only that is the boxers health, all their interactions/actions are solely clinical and research based, black or white decisions no grey areas.
So they are the ideal person to make decision of stopping the bout, so their involvement/powers in my opinion should be strengthened.

Now whether boxing is ready or indeed willing to accept Drs greater input we are yet to see.

 

I know the rules state that only the ref can stop the fight. To my knowledge, I don't recall a ref not stopping a fight after a doctor has recommended to do so. There are things a doctor can do while the fight is going on. Watch how a fighters legs react. If they stagger while walking, or their gate is off, usually is an indicator the fighter is in trouble. In between rounds check the fighters eyes. Perhaps this is something that should be done no matter what. Maybe at the half way point of 10+ fights. I am not a doctor but I know they can tell if a fighter is concussed by looking in their eyes.

 

It's rare, but a ref has thrown the towel back the corner. It may have been Mercante Jr. years back. I can't remember who, but it has happened.

That is my point, refs calling Drs to check on a fighter is dependent on ref doing that, i agree never witnessed a ref going against Dr decision that boxer cannot continue.
I frankly can see no issue in a Dr routinely going to the corners between rounds, by the time a boxers gait or other external signs of issues are apparent, the damage has compromised major motor areas of the brain, whereas earlier warning signs which are not obvious from outside of the ropes, like pupillary response or verbal responses would be picked up by Dr in the corner, and at minimum require a more in depth check or indeed require fight to be stopped.
There are Drs (experts) at ringside, utilise that expertise, we can never make the sport totally safe, blows to the head cause damage, but we sure as hell can minimise tragedies or life changing damage to fighters.

 

That was from the fighters corner not the doctor. But, yeah, still odd that a ref would not stop the fight at the corners request.
