Roadwork is such a waste of time for fighters, I have no idea why these guys continue to train like this. When you run, you get your body into a cardio zone and basically maintain it, which does improve cardiovascular health. However, in boxing, what mostly gets a guy gassed is not his overall cardio, it is when the other fighter dictates the timing and pace that kills a fighter, like them forcing you to be explosive in a moment you weren't prepared to be. Combat sports are more "explosive" than running. Makes about as much sense as a soccer player or formula 1 driver lifting weights.

Against Miller its another story. He will enforce Joshua all night, and he is not explosive so to speak. Will not dictate the timing. I think Joshua should practise some wrestling instead.

It is good to create a base fitness at the start of camp. Then as the fight draws closer move to short intervals.

formula 1 drivers have to do huge ammounts of core training for the g forces they go through

and all top football clubs have weight rooms where players have to train.

virtually all football players are ripped but have compulsary weigh ins and fat to body ratio tests

Would probably leave it to the professionals. Also if Cristiano Ronaldo doesnt lift weights and benefit from it then I’ll eat my hat. Blokes made a career from being one of the most hardworking and powerful forwards that ever lived

Marciano was religious about his roadwork. He never tired. Ali was also. Long list of fighters that did tons of roadwork. The list is long for a reason.

roadwork is essential. i cant see any champ, including stork legs, not doing roadwork for a title fight. if he doesnt, he should be easy to beat beyond the 4th rd.

I think a lot of fighters at lower weights use it to make weight more than anything else.

I also think while boxing is predominantly a anaerobic sport there is an aerobic element and so running and improving your aerobic base does have some benefit. You ever see Hopkins gas in the ring? He ran a lot of miles.

Calzaghe do did many long hill runs as a part of his training and his stamina was immense. I think his runs because of the hills added an element of intensity normal long slow runs lack and so he was working closer to his lactate threshold which saw benefits in his overall stamina that normal long slow runs wouldn't of given him.

This. It also helps with your recuperating ability after taking hard shots. It’s the main reason I think Usyk has a chance against the top heavyweights, since he gets in his 6 miles of daily roadwork. Wilder, who’s been very critical of roadwork for years was sucking wind against Fury. Fury’s 5 miles of roadwork going into the Wilder fight is what allowed him to stand on strong and steady legs after getting dropped by Wilder.

Boxing is mostly anaerobic but requires extremely quick aerobic recovery. It's basically sprinting short invervals but you jog and move around in between the intervals. Basically long distance sprinting.

This is why people often underestimate the conditioning required with boxing. Natural long distance runners find themselves huffing air when they encounter the explosive part of boxing, and vice versa for natural sprinters.

Not to mention each punch you take sucks the endurance out of you, requiring an even greater cardio base to account for punches taken.
