From his recent interview to SPORTING NEWS: SN: Aleksandr Usyk makes the step up from cruiserweight to heavyweight and faces a former opponent of yours in Carlos Takam on May 25. Will you be keeping an eye on how Usyk performs as he is now a mandatory challenger of yours? AJ: “100 percent, my plan if I had a crystal ball would be, myself and Wilder, I beat him to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Then I would fight Usyk because that’s like the former undisputed cruiserweight champion against the current undisputed heavyweight champion. It would be a big event. I have a lot of respect for Usyk, he’s a good fighter, he’s come from an Olympic background, represented his country, he’s from a different breed, the message we send is with our fists and in the ring. When you have people like Miller that come from the grimy gyms in New York then they have to do a lot of talking to back up their s—t, they are a different kettle of fish. So Usyk, big respect to you, good luck against Carlos Takam and welcome to the heavyweight division, the division of strength, speed, power and I wish you success.
Joshua and Hearn are grooming that puny cruiserweight. So when Usyk is offered up as a sacrificial lamb to this juiced up behemoth. The drunken casuals will think that this fighter that beat Bellew is a credible threat. In reality, he stands no chance of fending off the angry bodybuilder. Just hope Deontay gets to Usyk in time, and gets the credit, for savagely KOing him Spilka style, before Anthony does.
I would respect Wilder if he fought Usyk. He wouldn't though, too legit and dangerous. Why do that when you can talk **** instead?
Uysk aint going down easy, Wait for these HW's especially joshua to get frustrated and tired trying to catch Usyk. a big tired behemoth is a sitting duck. Wilder has more stamina then Joshua so he will more of the threat.
No modern day cruiser weight will replicate what Evander did at heavyweight. I keep thinking of a Haye and Klitschsko scenario when I think what will happen if Usyk fights Joshua. Or maybe a Parker scenario when the Ukranian realizes he can't box off the front foot against this roided up bodybuilder!
Well Usyk is the only ever cruiserweight to actually become Unified Undisputed Undefeated Champion , which is more than what Holyfield did at cruiserweight and I have nothing but admiration for Evander . If anyone can replicate that it's Usyk , jumping up to HW is a big leap I agree but gotta give Usyk credit because he has not failed yet and you cannot turn your back on the man . I'm really not fussed about it because I know that an AJ V Usyk will happen soon at Wembley with packed crowd and we all know it will be a good fight regardless . Unlike certain other boxers in the division .
That's admirable. I see Usyk as one of those fighters that excel in 1 weight division. But when they step up, people will realize that the attributes needed to be successful are just not there. The leap of cruiserweight to heavyweight is much harder than other weight divisions. I do think his skill. and workrate won't be enough to make up for what he'll face, when he comes up against these huge behemoths. One mistake, and it could be lights out. Different ball game when you dealing with natural heavyweights. that could render you unconscious in one fell swoop.
True we seen countless CW fails . I think it's just a fair bet that Usyk will do better than most other CW going up , and we will see how well he can perform , a lot of people believe in his ability and he is not shy of challenges or opportunities . If Takam defeats him then we know he will struggle at HW but if Usyk wins then the top 5 really got to watch out because he is the complete champion at CW now in HW who can fight in that division . If he KO's Takam then Usyk is already above the likes of Fury and Wilder in my books and he will be up there with AJ as number 1 and 2 .
Yeh but he will be putting on a good 15-20lbs hes a very crisp puncher, i can see him stunning alot of hw's hes going to batter takam, who is pretty tough! HW's arent used to speed precision of that nature, they are used to slower punches, with less guile.
Usyk will beat Takam. I would favour him to beat even Joseph Parker. who's a belt holder like Chageav and Ibragimov were. But usually there's a big step up in level, with the top guys in the division. 10 years ago, it was Wlad and Vitali. Today's division it's 3 of them Fury, Wilder, and Joshua. 3 big dangerous superheavyweights. I think the only other shortish heavyweight who could outbox those 3, and give up a enormous size advantage was Larry Holmes.
