AJ has stated he wants to out-skill Usyk according to Hearn, AJ is better on te backfoot but will not be able to knock Usyk out moving and with the low punch out-put he displayed v Ruiz, Usyk is far better on the front foot than Ruiz, is AJ making a big mistake? This content is protected
meh he doesnt have much choice. If he tries to blow Usyk out he's gonna gas himself. His best bet is the Ruiz fight plan
I have a nagging suspicion that AJ's understanding of the "sweet science" most likely comes from watching Wlad jab and hug people for the later part of his career.
He`ll need to throw far more punches than he did v Ruiz and Usyk is much better on the front foot than when he is pushed back.
His reach will be a factor and on the outside his right hand will be dangerous but Usyk has a better jab and combos and is quicker.
Usyk is likely technically better (for the record, I'm not saying AJ is bad technically either) in every department, but there frames are so different in AJ's favor that AJ could probably rely mostly on jabs and rights and play it safe while Usyk will have to find other tricks.
But is he big enough to use his better jab? I’m not so sure. Also Joshua throws combos himself and has a lot more power in both hands. Will Isyk be happy to stay in range enough to throw his combinations? Again I’m not so sure. Usyk is quicker. He certainly used to be but he didn’t look overwhelmingly quick against Chisora.
I'm surprised Joshua isn't coming in heavy with the intention of blasting Usyk out early. We all know Usyk is a very slow starter and wide open to power punches in the opening rounds. Losing weight isn't going to magically give him a better gas tank than Usyk. If Usyk can control the pace of the fight and get the tempo high Joshua is going to struggle. I think coming in light is a big mistake, assuming he does.
