It must have been a tough decision on skipping Jess Willard and moving straight to Dempsey. Adam did write a book on Marvin Hart who would be less known than Willard by a fair margin. I think the big decider might have been that Jess had been featured recently in the Arly Allen/James Willard Mace book "Jess Willard - Heavyweight Champion of the World". Guess there is only so much demand for books on Jess.
Fair enough. I imagine that Tunney willl be included in part 2 and that will probably finish the series. If he goes back, Peter Jackson is a good one who didnt get a run, or maybe some of the pre sullivan champs. Anyway, i am sure Dempsey will be up to the usual standards.
Does anyone know if any of Dempsey's family members were interviewed for this? I would imagine they would have some stories. I heard Jack had daughters, i wonder if they are still alive today.
Hart’s era and title claim more interesting. Knowing less about him made the book more interesting. The only parts of Willard’s career that are interesting are covered in Johnson and (I assume) Dempsey books. Willard in the lead-in to the Dempsey fight was covered by Klompton in his Greb book. He was an awful champion.
Ha ha Sorry to disappoint. I just couldn't get sufficiently motivated for a Willard book, and several folks were begging me to do a Dempsey book. Of course, Willard is featured sufficiently in the Dempsey book, as well as Johnson.
Tremendous book !! the resear ch on this book is awesome..even beyond his other treasures if you like dempsey it is the ultimate Dempsey boxing book by far !!!
I've ordered mine. ps ordered Sonny Liston Was A Friend Of Mine,byThom Jones. Came today, turns out its only a short booklet of 45 pages!
I ordered my copy! Regarding Dempsey's daughters, he had two daughters by his third wife, Hannah Williams, and adopted the daughter of wife Deanna. I went to Dempsey's wake in NYC when he passed away in 1983. I saw both of his daughters there and expressed my condolences to his widow. If his daughters are still alive they would be in their early 80s today.
