I wonder how do you rank it from 1 to 10. AJ is labeled now as a glass-jawed by many, but: 1) He took Whyte's left hook and stayed on his feet 2) He took Wlad's numerous punches in round 5 and stayed on his feet 3) He got up after monstrous right hand of Wlad in round 6 and eventually won the fight 4) He took few Povetkin's combinations early in the fight 5) Managed to never get dropped by Usyk in 24 rounds, unlike Fury and Dubois On the other hand: 1) Dropped 4 times by Ruiz 2) Dropped 4 times and KO'd by Dubois
Imagine what a monster right from prime Wilder would have done to Joshua's legs, he would have been break dancing for 50 seconds on the canvas
I'd say a 6 a bit better than average but can still be vulnerable at times he's like a deer in the headlights when he gets caught.
The problem with AJ's chin is how he reacts to punches. When he gets caught, he gets caught with multiple shots at a time. You see it in the Ruiz, Usyk & Dubois fights. Once you hit him flush once, he becomes a sitting duck for more punches. I think he's got a decent chin, but his reaction to flush shots makes it worse. It's similar to how Wladimir used to react when getting hit. They panic and they don't know how to defend themselves properly.
Probably about 6/10. Clearly doesn't have a great chin but some people forgot how much power Dubois had cause he fought Miller and Hrgovic back to back who have 10/10 punch resistance.
The way I assess him his chin is average or a bit below average at HW but it's terrible for his massive size. He gets so much abuse for it because he does the thug thing so the fact he doesn't have a tough chin is ironic entertainment. We also have to remember a few things. 1. David Price KO'd him badly in sparring. Funny story. Thought I'd mention it. 2. In the Wlad fight, Wlad struggled to land clean after the KD, and was too patient. It wasn't like AJ was taking massive punishment. I remember watching thinking Wlad was letting us all down not finishing the job. But Wlad and Vitali knew better. 3. Povetkin was already shot by then. 4. Usyk still hurt him decently, probably not too much different from Fury and Dubious. Fury was also not fully recovered from taking bombs from the mma fighter. 5. Bidness man. Innit.
5 or 6 out of 10, his issue is more his lack of ability to recover after being hurt. Fury probably doesn't have that much better a chin given how many times he's been down or maybe worse given how Usyk hurt him worse than AJ but his powers of recovery are far, far superior so even when he's hurt he doesn't stay hurt for very long.
Dubois has a KO 95% and he can punch holes in castle walls Wlad is one of the top five hardest punchers of all time This content is protected Povetkin had devastating one shot KO power in both hands, is one of the greatest combination punchers in HW history, and he has one of the best KO HL reels since a prime Tyson (and there are many missing from this one) This content is protected Granted they were old and well past their best but they were still good fighters and extremely powerful and dangerous punchers. Prime Wlad sparks AJ out as soon as he wants him out of there but AJ still ate some big bombs from him Whyte has a massive left hook and he sparked the teak-tough Chisora out cold with it J-Park once said Fat Andy was the hardest puncher he'd faced albeit that was pre big sexy Chinese man and Bum Dosser J-Park dropped Chisora and hurt him badly numerous times Helenius can crack Martin can crack Pulev is the JTFO KO GOAT Usyk has hurt every HW he's faced and he KO'd Dubois and came within a whisker of doing the same to Belly Regardless of how you rank AJ's punch resistance it's hardly a knock on your chin to get KO'd by someone who hits like Dubois as he has crazy heavy hands and throws with extremely bad intentions
That's the thing isn't it. Punches turn the guy into a zombie. He's hard to put down but he also just shuffles around with a vacant look on his face.
As mentioned his chin is okay. Not great but fine. But he doesn't fight well when hurt and recovers slowly. It's not a toughness thing & I don't criticize him for it.
Around a 6. He's clearly not getting slept by single punches. But he gets hurt easily. The punch Dubois landed in the first was literally right on the chin. That punch would sleep a lot of guys. So, not glass, but not good at all. Not the best instincts when hurt either.
On a scale of ten Ten being a Vitali Klitschko level cast iron chin One being a David Price level chin where a stiff breeze could knock him down Id say he’s a 5, the way Eddie was talking can’t see AJ taking the rematch or fighting anyone who hits hard as the blue print to beat him is clear
