Joshuas guard is more effective then Lewis. You could get around Lewis more open guard. He fought like that to keep his opponents away more ,this is why he relied more on clinching and physical holding to over power guys with his size if they got past his jab or Lewis felt he was going to get hit he would clinch a l lot.( Manny taught Wlad this tacttic) this is why he struggled with Vitali , the open long range guard ,he had no answer for Vitali other then hold and hit when he couldnt cope and it worked in the end ( we know why ). joshua has the abilities to catch and counter...counter puncher, making it far more difficult to land a clean shot on and the reaction time to throw back is greater as the opponent is open ,so you are able to open up the opponent far more if you are Joshua . M. Tyson guard was more on the style itself not where he placed his hands, so really its the fighter themselves that dictated how hard they were to hit. Each used what was best for them and were capable of. M.Tyson was far harder to land a clean punch on then either because he ducked under or slipped shots while coming back with them .Lewis and Joshua being 6'5/ plus needed to gage guys a bit more being mostly taller then them and working themselves in on opponents . (See Lewis vs Tyson ) ( see Aj vs Povetkin ) There is no better guard bc it depends on the fighter ,but the more effective one if you are tall is AJ's. The more effective style would be Tyson as long as you had his attributes. The hardest guy to defeat is going to be Joshua in very short time ,hes to big fast and athletic and has great ring IQ at 6'6. Its a fact. lol
I don't think it's as simple as saying one is better than the other as what works for one fighter wouldn't for another. Joshua for example would probably struggle using Lewis' guard, he doesn't have the head and upper body movement to get away with it and if he did the energy that style would expend would probably see him gas more often as we all know his stamina isn't great.
Too soon to say since Joshua has only had 22 fights, so his defense hasn’t been tested against enough styles yet. Joshua needs at least 35-40 fights under his belt before I could even begin comparing his effectiveness to Lennox Lewis.
His own guard is pretty hard to get through and he can get his punches off very quick with his hands in that position.
Ali and Holmes wouldn`t have KO`d Lewis, Lennox punched harder than Ali and Holmes was tagged by a sloppy fighter like Shavers.
