Yeah this is it. We were subjected to years of Joshua being whiter than white after what was clearly some intense media and PR training. Obviously it contributed to making him millions from sponsors and seeing him be the face of Sky Sports for years, but I wonder how many favours it's done him in the long run. We've had to witness him try and play some wise and philosophical persona, with some very cringe results. And now we're seeing some kind of roadman personality which also comes across as forced.

I think soon all he'll have left is to just be himself. Tyson was Tyson, unashamedly, if Joshua is just Joshua then I imagine people will be fine with it, even if it does involve him having a very thin skin when it comes to criticism from fans. Hopefully it also translates to seeing him get some spite back in the ring, something that was everpresent before the Ruiz loss, and has disappeared ever since.

It is interesting, how his persona seems to have changed. Personally I don’t have much of an opinion on him either way, because he has zero personality so I just nothing him really. I don’t mind him as a boxer and his early knockouts were entertaining.

His behaviour in the ring after Usyk the rematch did annoy me though, because anyone with half a brain who knew what was going on the world would have quietly left the ring and let Usyk celebrate with his people and fans.

    That's correct.

And as I say I think he's a bit odd and boring to listen too, and yes he's been heavily marketed. Still find it weird how intense everyone is when he acts like an idiot all this "were seeing the true Joshua" here threatening students as if he's the biggest **** in the world for doing. The sports full of edgy characters always has been, he's just a big daft plank in my opinion and I find it all amusing

Yeh that was annoying, but also comedy gold unintentionally. Looked like a big roid head off his Barnet in a local club somewhere trying to throw his weight about

I think fans get unreasonably upset about this sort of thing. Nobody knew Jake LaMotta was a wife beater. Nor Sugar Ray Robinson. Back then your private life wasn't expected to be public. You just presented the media self and everyone knew it was happening and got on with it. Even with Presidents, this was the case.

It's only in the time of reality TV that extremely famous people are expected to present their authentic self or be derided faker. These guys are at work at the end of the day. Many of the people reading this present a face at work, but for some reason famous people, and many boxers (Rabidly oftentimes) get it tight. I actually agree that authentic is best, but if someone doesn't want to be their "true self" while on television, I don't really blame them.

I guess the trade-off is when you start making TV and media appearances as your "true self" and going heavy on the marketing to boost your sponsorship money as much as possible. People end up feeling short-changed if it all turns out to be false.

Mayweather didn't earn his money from sponsorships so gets more of a pass to do and say as he pleases. Some actors will look to raise their public profile and look to make money from adverts, some will lay low and live a quiet life. Hell it's the same with politicians just look at Matt Hancock in the bloody celebrity jungle.

When Joshua goes from being the nicest guy on earth on Graham Norton's sofa, to threatening students and telling fans to suck his ****, he can expect to receive some backlash. It works both ways.
