Put AJ back to 1993, how would he fair again the opponents of Lennox Lewis during his two championship reigns?

Presume the opponent that faced Lewis shows up to face AJ and factor in his potential improvement as his career in the 90’s progresses

    Tony Tucker
    Frank Bruno
    Phil Jackson
    Tommy Morrison
    Ray Mercer
    Oliver McCall
    Henry Akinwande
    Andrew Golota
    Shannon Briggs
    Zeljko Mavrovic
    Evander Holyfield
    Michael Grant
    Frans Botha
    David Tua
    Hasim Rahman
    Mike Tyson
    Vitali Klitschko

Out of all the tools to beat AJ with this is the worst one.

You can’t blame him for the generation he was born in.

He’s beating what’s in front of him, that’s all he can do.

I dont think he does lose to most of them....I do think Lennox would make fairly light work of Joshua tho

I’m actually a fan, I think he does quite well against most of these guys as he progresses

Time will tell. Joshua hasn't lost yet. We don't know how good he is. Lennox started off like a world beater (who retires Noel Quarless in their 7th fight) but went into a long fallow period before emerging as an all time great.

I don't see quite as much raw talent in Joshua (would we really be discussing whether Lennox Lewis could beat Tyson Fury?) but we don't know yet. He has passed every test given to him.

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick here.

The OP even suggests taking in to account his potential progress through the 90's. Good thread imo.

I think Joshua does well against all but about 4 or 5 of them.

Just looked it up, and I knew Lewis was a big HW but didnt realise that he and Joshua were pretty much the same size and weight !! I think Lewis looked a lot lighter than Joshua due to his feet being far lighter and mobile.

Think Joshua beats most of them but loses to about four along the way. He definitely loses to a prime Vitali, loses to an aging Holyfield, loses to Mercer. I think he loses at least one of Bruno, McCall, Morrison, Golota, Grant and Tua as well.

Wouldn't fancy Joshua's chances against guys like Mercer, Holyfield or Vitali.

Golota is a tough one to call as you don't know which version of him would turn up.

I think Bruno would be very dangerous for AJ in the early rounds but would probably be stopped later on.

This is really unfair question for two reasons:

    1. Lennox Lewis resume and dominance as champion puts him objectively in the top 10 of All time now no matter who you ask in 2017.
    2. You can only fairly judge a HW from 15 years after they have retired, and more objectively 25 years afterwards (one generation of sports writers to die off and not be bias)

It is especially unfairly in this case for two reasons:
    1. Lennox Lewis in my opinion is a top 2 or top 3 HW of all time, and by 2028, by 25 years following his retirement will be accepted at that high by everyone.
    2. AJ is only 20 fights into a career at aged 28 that has at least 4-5 years left in it. Currently the era is in a transitional phase awaiting a dominant champion to make his mark in 4-5 defences. There are too many unknowns to even compare him now until we know where he is in relation to his own generation.

This is all about subjective human preferences based on resume and dominance, and that changes depending on where that boxer is compared to the generation of sports writers of the day.

Tony Tucker was and still is underrated in my opinion, he never really gets a mention when people talk about that little era, I think the last three years of his career wrecked his image, resume and people's memories of him.

Before he fought and lost to Bruce Seldon, Tucker was 52-2 only losing to Tyson and Lewis on points. He won the vacant IBF belt beating Buster Douglas but lost it in his first defence against Tyson.

On his day he was a handful for anybody.

    This is very apt.

AJ is already 28 but in todays day and ge thats like 24 in the 70s and 80s.

Before we can really assess this properly we need another full active 18 months where he fights 5 times... With parker and one of wilder/fury in there..... Beating a wilder or fury both of whom i rate highly would give a better picture.....

As it is in honesty i see those 1990s guys as several leagues above 2010s hws wilder and fury notwithstanding

A 1990 tucker and a 1992 bruno would be severe tests..tucker takes him... Bruno is ahead but gets stopped in 11.. Holyfield whether its 92/96/99 versions all beat AJ.... .. 1991 tyson wins easy.. The rest of the decade tyson is beaten... The bunch of tua, mercer, rahman all have a credible possibility om their day of knocking AJ out.. On off dats aj wins.. The rest he handles... Vitali included

The 80s and 90s were savage times hw were gilled to the max. That era would destroy any other .

AJ doesn' have enough decent dancing partners to get close to Lennox through no fault of his own

Top 10 are ****ing garbage let's be real
