I've got no problems if you're loyal to Cymru, but not to a foreign queen!

It had more to do with the way it was offered. They ran it that if we chose to abandon the monarchy, the govt of the time would choose our head of state. Not exactly the most democratic format you've ever seen.

    Not really.

Ipswich is right in a way about the way the referendum was presented but I know many Aussies still loyal to our wonderful Queen. :good

Anyone aged 40 years and above would've sung "God save the Queen"(or King, depending on how far you want to go back) at school.

Australia has a strong bond with England (Great Britian) as both countries served in both world wars together. The vast majority of Australians have ancestory from G.B and our flag still has the union jack on it.

For this reason, many of the older Australians didn't want to cut ties with our history. That won't last long though as in some areas Australia is rotting from the inside out. :sad2

I for one can't wait to see Australia become a Republic. Having the Butcher's Apron in the corner of our flag is nothing short of embarrassing IMO.

I can understand that although it needs to be done the right way.

I don't believe that we should forget the nation's history and our links to Old England. Regardless of the politics and emotions involved the fact is that Australia is what it is today due to English colonization.

I aint in favour of changing our national anthem to waltzing matilda and having a green and gold flag with a ****ing kangaroo in the middle of it. You just can't throw away over 200 years of history.

I don't really know about these things but if you "off hired " Old Betty , would that automatically remove you from the commonwealth ?

Nah, India and many other nations are still within the Commonwealth. You can have a different head of state and still be within it.

The pros would be Australia finally finding it's own feet and it's identity. The cons.... well I don't think there are any, but then again I'm a staunch republican.
