One of the best fights you'll ever see. It's a shame the misfortune both of these guys endured after, and how neither is with us anymore. Don't see this one discussed nearly enough considering it's greatness. Man, Akeem was really being fast tracked at the time, had Roger Mayweather in his corner, top sparring, and was living the American dream supposedly. Shows how life can change in a moment I suppose. Boxing is that kind of sport. This content is protected Feedback, discussion, general thoughts and whatever else is relevant is welcome. Is it still a "great" fight, or has the boxing fans view of what constitutes one, or their taste in general, changed dramatically since this fight took place nearly 30 years ago now?
I'd say it holds up, yeah. Lots of ebb and flow and fought at high quality throughout. Like, if we a similar fight on September 9 from any of the three fights scheduled on that super-bantamweight showcase (minus the aftermath, of course) we won't be disappointed.
Good point. I'm not sure if this is a fight that would be beloved like Gatti/Ward even if it was more well known. The lower weight guys don't always get much love. How did you (and other posters) score the fight, Drew?
Great fight, I had Akeem winning. I think 116-112, it's been awhile. Depressing ending for both fighters.
Which is unfortunate, because in terms of blending quality and non-stop action you aren't gonna do much better than this fight. As far as that criteria goes, this fight surpasses a fight like Gatti-Ward. Both guys were on point, and were intent on proving that the hype was real (in the case of Akeem) and that they deserved to be considered legitimate champions in the division (in the case of Quiroga). And, in that regard, I think they both succeeded. I called for Akeem at the time, but there were so many close rounds that it could hardly be considered a robbery.
Great post, and good points. I'm particularly interested in the scoring of this fight, from the eyes of a more modern viewpoint, hence the post to General.
Still curious on peoples scores on this one, if anyone else has bothered to take a look at the fight.
