Really looking forward to this one. I've seen a small but dedicated contingent of posters on General maintain a high quality of discussion regarding the lower weight classes, so I'm going to try and participate. :happy

It seems like Yaegashi is being somewhat written off here. He rumbled with the near consensus P4P best not too long ago, and Mendoza is hardly the well rounded fighter that Gonzalez is.

He was stopped in one round by a 4-7 fighter in 2011. Yes, he was just a kid and not as much should be read into the early careers of some fighters who come up against much stiffer regional opposition than coddled prospects. Still, something to keep in mind.

Anyone have any thoughts on this one?

I agree, I think Mendoza is being very overrated in this match, he struggled with Melindo has lost by KO himself, and couldn't stop Hirales, also he's a Light Flyweight moving up in weight, Yaegashi has some pop and it might be just enough to take out Mendoza.:think

What do you mean by struggled? Was he getting touched up badly or just struggling?

Such a pain in the ass to find footage of some of these fights. There's footage of a lot of lower weight fights but damn, the quality. I want to see the nuances of the fight, not pixels ****ing one another.

    Also...

This will be Mendoza's first time fighting outside of Mexico

And of his last 15 fights, only 3 have gone past 4 rounds.

Wonder if the s****py and experienced Yaegashi will be able to grit his teeth and hang in there to take Mendoza into deep water.

He started out well, but wasn't able to get Melindo out of there, IIRC Melindo started having more success towards the end of the fight and the ref docked him some points for low blows and then there was a nasty headbutt, I commented on the RBR when it happened it buts its all hazy now, but I do remember he was struggling a little before the cuts stoppage.

Mendoza beat the **** out of Melindo. Had a much easier time with the Filipino than Estrada did. Although he looked like a bit of a pansy flopping to the ground whenever he was briefly fouled.

    He's a good fighter.

Akira's tough, quick and experienced, but his defence and head movement are non existent, and with his two beatings at the hands of Roman and Pedro, I don't know how long he will have left at world level.

    I'm taking Mendoza here.

The curious thing with Yaegadhi is that a while back, Mendoza was looked upon as the worst possible style belt holder he could fight. This fight did come as a surprise to many.
    WAR YAEGASHI!!!!

He's long, he's got a high workrate and he's got some boxing skill. That should be enough to turn over Yagaeshi. But then again, I thought Guevara was going to be a future long time champion before his upset.

    Yaegashi's a huge underdog, no?

    Maybe a lucrative opportunity there..

Narrow, he was +145 but some money came in on Mendoza and he's now sitting at +170 I believe.

Yaegashi is moving back down to 108, where he fought Guevara. Never easy to move down.

I think a lot has to do with Yaegahsi starting to look shop worn and, of course, moving down. I'm suspect Mendoza grinds him down.

Interesting to read that Mendoza has a HUGE reach advantage

Do people consider Akira a very "old" 32 year old fighter? Don't know if he was known as a blood and guts type before his two stoppage losses.

Suffered a serious injury against Eagle, had wars with Porpramook and Ioka, took plenty of damage vs Igarashi, a pounding vs Roman...I'd say he's an old 32 and recognising the miles that sparring with Naoya would add as well as battles with the likes of Horikawa and the weight loss.

Certainly not "shot" at 32 but... On the slide
