I was able to catch only the final round, and I could feel it myself, how absolutely exhausted Yaegashi was in that 9th round, and the courage and internal fortitude he showed to start that round with such a flurry of activity was simply extraordinary. I was thinking during the round that fighters typically do not come out of matches like this the same ever again. So in that sense, it was probably a blessing for Yaegashi that the end came when it did, rather than face 3+ more rounds of probably inevitably worse and worse punishment while being less and less able to endure it. No idea if he really did speculate on retirement during the postfight interviews, as another poster here speculated, I imagine that's standard after losing fights like this. But hopefully, at least physically, the stoppage allows him to fight another day, if he chooses. As for Gonzalez, this win, being of the magnitude it is, surely puts him not only in the definitive Top Ten P4P rankings, but maybe, hopefully, if he does fight the Estrada vs Segura winner next, it further raises the profile of that fight, and hopefully gains the attention of the TV networks and casual boxing fans in America.

So what do we think? Even with most rounds going to Gonzalez, was this competitive enough to surpass Rodriguez vs. Takayama in the FOTY running? :think

Oh - and for those who don't normally follow this end of the scales: there is another kid from Nicaragua, also unbeaten, with a similar nickname to Gonzalez, and who actually trains and spars (competitively) with Gonzalez...and while he is younger and rawer, he looks as though he will be almost every bit as good. :deal :pop

    Chocorroncito Buitrago, look him up.

Fights CP Freshmart for the WBA interim 105 title soon! That'll be a good one.

I must confess to not having seen that fight. Must have taken my eye off the ball, not hanging around this forum all the time has a surprisingly negative effect on my awareness!

Gonzalez-Yaegashi, for me, was just a bit too one sided to merit fight of the year. Not to fret though, El Gallo and El Guerrero Azteca can earn that tomorrow night...

This, the Takayama fight and the Eto/Diale fight have to be on the shortlist for FOTY

This was too one sided, Molina vs Lucas for example was better than this. Rodriguez vs. Takayama wins it for me so far.

    :good

I have barely any Japanese comprehension myself, but just from watching Yaegashi give his interview afterward it did seem he was saying goodbye to his fans just from body language alone.

You're right, skipping the likely brutal championship rounds means he might have enough left for one more high-caliber outing. (fingers crossed for Ioka rematch!)

Unfortunately, there was a statement from Espinoza (the Showtime boxing exec) that he doesn't like foreign cards...which compounds the problem of light-end boxers never being seen as moneymakers despite having the potential to be if marketed correctly.

...and we already know HBO is uninterested in foreign action outside the circus act Top Rank cards in China with the likes of Zou Shiming guaranteeing hoopla and media attention.

The lb for lb rankings on Boxrec don't even have Gonzalez within 25. :rofl :patsch

Soliman > Gonzalez, or so their computerized point system reckons.

Gonzo has to be, at minimum, top 5 P4P right now. He's got a damn good case for top 3. It's harder and harder to keep Ward above him anymore....

Truly an exceptional fighter. Props to Yaegashi, who was a more than worthy opponent. Gonzalez is just something else.
