The man knows his boxing. Everytime he commentates he can break down each fighters strength and weakness. He calls fights very well. Al gives credit where it is due, he is respectful of the fighters, and tries to be unbias, even though once or twice I have seen him lean toward one fighter. Al Bernstein was the right man calling that 3rd Vazquez/Marquez fight and I know he was enjoying it every bit as much as we were. :good
he was stretching it for Marquez in the first rounds and when he saw the press row scores after round 4 he started changing his tune.
He's pretty good, I catch him confusing names quite often, but other than that he's the best out there, the guys that do the fights on the Versus channel are pretty good as well.
He's a great analyst. I'll go ahead and call him the best announcer in the sport in terms of knowledge.
Bernstein and Tompkins back on the old ESPN shows are by far my all-time favorite boxing commentating team. Smart guys with good chemistry, a huge, yet subtle knowledge of boxing, and always a great respect for the boxers themselves.
I agree he sure was but over all I still enjoyed his commentary. He is definitely a very unbiased commentator and actually understands boxing.
I mostly agree. Al is my favorite commentator. My main beef with him is he isn't the most exciting commentator. He doesn't change his voice inflection very often. And if it isn't an exciting fight, he doesn't do anything to make it exciting and I'll get bored. He doesn't stir sh*t up like Atlas or Merchant will by either getting really excited or with inflammatory comments. But, that being said, he IS my favorite commentator.
It is the main commentator's job to add excitement(change tone of voice) when giving the play by play . It is the other commentators job to give key technical incite on what is happening , why it's happening and what fighter (a)/(b) should be doing to combat this/be more effective . I feel Bernstein is the best colour commentator in the business , and I mean not just in the US(HBO , Showtime , ESPN etc) but Worldwide(SKY , Setanta , Canadian/Australian channels I can't think the name of , ITV , RTE and so on) at least best English speaking commentator out there .
I agree, but, I still think he is too monotone. Atlas brings plenty of excitement when he is talking. Roy jones did. Emmanuel Steward does. I'm not saying they are as good technically as Bernstein. But, they do bring an additional level of excitement when they are commentating.
