Roy Jones was a great athlete AND a great fighter. His athleticism was one factor which contributed to his greatness. He had stupendous speed of hand and foot, knockout power, good defence, good infighting skills on the ropes. Sorry Al, you're talking ****.

link pleas...cant see Al Bernstein talking such crap.

also easy to criticise a guy when he loses @ 35.

Duran got schooled by Kirkland Lang when he was 28!!! got Kod by Hearns..!! amazing how forgiving we are to other generations.

He means Roy Jones had physical gifts above everyone else. Like Mike Tyson, when his body started ageing he couldn't do what he used to do.

Someone like Hopkins on the other hand is not as naturally gifted, but got good by repitition, keep practicing and repeating moves and using intelligent boxing, something which he will never lose regardless of age.

There are two way to reach excellence:
    1) Just be naturally amazing at something and have no idea how you are doing it.
    2) Practice and Practice until you learn it.

Unfortunately/fortunately Roy Jones Jr was a natural at boxing, and once his body and confidence started to decline he didn't know how to do what he did so couldn't get it back.

If you practice and practice and learn something from repitition you never lose it.

Everyone knows though that once his athlethicism faded, he became very vulnerable and really couldn't beat any real top-notch opponent anymore.

You can make a comparison to Ali, who also relied on his athletic qualities a lot when he was young, but who was still able to beat some of the very best after he started fading.

I say RJJ was a great athlete and a good, but not great fighter.

If he was just a great athlete he wouldnt have acomplished half of what he did.

Bernstein isnt bad but hes clearly wrong there.

All great fighter get old and lose something, Weight in addition to age contributed to Roys decline.

Did hagler rely on Athletic ability? if so why did he lose to a blown up welter??

why did all these old ATG lose well before they were 35?

ROy was a great fighter + great athlete

What about the countless journeymen with 50+ losses? How long do you think they've been practicing? Yet they still get put in to be run over by debutants. Talent is much more important than practice. If you don't have the talent, you can become decent with practice and experience, if you have the talent, practice= perfection.

I understand what he meant he was just going by what is considered the basic fundamentals of boxing which Roy never really seemed to use like say a Joe Louis....Roy was truly gifted his reflexes ,speed ,and power gave him an unbeleivable gift and its only since the 1st Tarver fight that we see what happens when time catches up with a fighter.

That is a rare stupid statement from Bernstein. Roy was almost untouched in the ring for 15 years. If he had retired after the Ruiz fight like he should have no one would have ever been able to say **** about him. You don't beat that many fighters and great fighters and not take punches if you don't have some serious skills. Granted his defensive skills were built on his freakish speed and now that he is getting older and slowing down he is much easier to hit, but RJJ is still a smart veteran fighter and not just an athlete-boxer like Jermain Taylor.
