Roy was a better athlete than a fighter perhaps, but to say he isn't a great fighter is bull****. The way he was untouchable for a full decade is exactly a regular occurrence.

Al Bernstein is a ******, anyway.

his quote is being taken out of context and as usual the ESB know-it-alls are having a hissy fit.

    When asked

In the post-Muhammed Ali era, from the mid-eighties on, could you to rate the best three all-around fighters?

    Bernstein replied

"You have to put Roy Jones there"

I heard the same thing said about Ali, that he made a lot of mistakes in a boxing sense. Great athletes make great fighters. It is just when you get older and your reflexes dwindle, the mistakes become more apparent. Jones had a load of talent and a long amatuer pedigree...he is top 10 at 175lbs

''He didn’t work at his craft hard enough to be a great fighter. But he’s a great athlete, and so he ended up being great in the ring.''

That comment makes no sense to me, The proofs in the pudding if Bernstein thinks he was great in the ring he can't hate on the guy just because he didn't perfect his craft. Roy was blessed with supreme speed of hand and foot.

I kind of agree with this comment though ''When his quickness and some of his physical skills started to fail him, he had nothing else left to go back to. He didn’t have the technique.'' Bernard i think said it a while ago that Roy didn't have the fundamentals there so when the speed and reflexes go for fighters they then rely on fundamentals to see them through fights.

They're saying that because he was a bit unorthodox. Having a more orthodox style would have slowed him down a lot and negated his advantages. Let's face it, the guy didn't need to rely on the fundamentals.

With all due respect,Radab,Jones never ducked Joe.He just refused to travel after being robbed in the '88 Olympics. He has commented on this many times and has never denied this. And he ducked Joe but fought prime James Toney, who had a fiercer reputation than Joe?Joe's a helluva fighter, but I really don't beieve that Jones ducked Joe to fight someone like Toney.Just doesn't make any sense.

Athletism was one of the factors that main him a great fighter. Is it that great fighters cant be athletic?

I guess there is nothing great about winning a title in middle, super middle, and light heavyweight division...... or holding the WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO, NABF, WBF, and IBA light heavyweight championships at the same time.

As for as technically almost all pro boxers make a "mistake." When they get used to fighting, they tend to have a style of their own and abandon some of the technical features.

Athleticism is not a quality which disappears overnight. The Jones of the Ruiz fight and before, and the Jones of the first Tarver fight and after, were two completely different animals. The piling on and burning off of muscle ruined Jones physically. He was a great athlete and a great fighter before that happened.
