Al Bernstein is a person who is in position to watch film on great fighters. It is great to be able o do that on a daily basis. What Bernstein says about Jones is total frankenturtlebulldunky. His opinion stems from Jones supposed lack of brawls during his career. The man truly lost his first fight at age 35, and he had been fighting pro since age 19 or 20. Jones was a phenom.

I don't think it's that ridiculous a statement as people are making it. I'm not saying Roy isn't a great fighter. But going by the people of ESB, Roy lost his athleticism after the Ruiz fight. He's 5-4 since then. I just feel he relied more on his physical tools than his boxing ability. Like B-Hop for instance, he was never given the ability of RJJ, so he had to work on his craft and boxing. But again, I'm not trying to saying Roy isn't a great fighter. People need to calm down a little bit.

Roy was a superb athlete who never needed to adjust till late in his career his speed and reflexes were great, Sure Roy was never a technical boxing speciment but to say he was not a great fighter is pushing it a bit, although i do not think that is what Bernstein meant.

Jones was one of the greatest fighters ever. He did things that people had never been done before in a boxing ring. yes he was blessed with phenomonal, skills, and reflexes, but he still had to train hard in order to be able to use those skills in the ring. He is still a formidable fighter at age 40 though not nearly as good as he once was.

Roy is 5-4 because boxing is a young man's game and he stuck around too long just like Holyfield, Ali, Holmes, Sweat pea, Chavez & others. As for Hopkins his last few fights have been against much smaller men in Pavlik & Winky, I doubt RJJ would've lost to either man, let Bhops fight Dawson & watch him show his age.

If you watch Roy Jones even after 30 yrs of age he was no where near his best as he was at 26-30.

he was past it after 30 but he was that good he got away with it, and he showed he could adjust. He stopped going out to Ko people and boxed /toyed with people.

U could argue that Roy faught a reserved style ...thats it

Roy Jones Jr is one of the most natural gifted and talented boxers who have ever lived along with Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Amstrong and Sugar Ray Leonard, what sort of crap is this from a Gentleman and an experienced insider like Bernstein?

bernstein maybe considering only the top 30 fighters of all time as ATG...
i would say that top 100 boxers in history would be ATG in my book.

it is just that bernstein has a high standard for a boxer to be viewed as a great one. Call him crazy if he says trinidad is ATG while jones isnt

I hope that was a damn joke.

RJJ was the p4p king. Joe Calzaghe was a nobody beatin on bums and refusing to fight anyone outside Wales. Hell, before he beat Lacy, even people in the UK and Wales barely gave a **** about him.

Joe didn't want any of Roy until he was 37 and a walking corpse in the ring.. and even against that version of RJJ, Joe still got knocked down :D

Roy was both, but as his career went on, he moved farther away from the fundamental side and relied more on his athleticism- which is still at an above average level with the exception of his leg movement. That somewhat overreliance on his overall athleticism, however, meant that he couldn't compensate fundamentally to age as well as some other guys, but the extent of his physical shotness still gets overstated on here.

What's really shot is his mindset- he never threw a ton of punches anyways, but he threw even less once he hit the rough patch in his career because he just didn't trust himself to get hit back. He got away with bad habits because of his reflexes, and just got too used to them to be able to compensate when other guys caught up to him.

Still a great fighter and career though- there's no doubt about that. He's just not unbeatable, which shouldn't be taken as an insult because nobody is.
