I would pay top dollar to see these two in their prime. Two hoods with a throwdown mentality and plenty of pop. Neither gives nor takes quarter. Not only a matter of who walks out a winner, but who walks out alive.
Al Davis was the best left-hooker I ever saw ringside, from an orthodox stance along with today's David Lemieux MW. But Bummy was in his prime a lightweight whilst Vargas was a large WW...P4P Bummy Davis was better...

I have never really been impressed with Vargas, saw him live twice and all his major fights... I wouldn't sell Davis too short on this one.
About the only thing Davis had was a left hook. Between his lack of ability and his size deficiency, Vargas' power and durability and Davis would get his ass kicked royally. Davis lost (and lost badly) every time he stepped up in class with the exception of LW Bob Montgomery and an ancient Tony Canzoneri in his last fight.
My dad and I saw Bummy Davis ko Bob Montgomery an 8-1 favorite, in the very first round with his powerful left hooks. We in the crowd went berserk. Several weeks after this sensational upset, we were lucky to get tickets to the sold out MSG, to see Bummy Davis take on Mr. Action ,Beau Jack. Well in the very first round Bummy Davis connected on Beau Jack's jaw shaking Beau and to our surprise Beau Jack recovered quickly and proceeded to give the rough and tough Al Davis a lacing for a unanimous decision...Before Beau Jack burnt himself out fighting so darn often, he was a helluva fighting lightweight who threw every punch in the book for 15 rounds if required...My very favorite action fighter was Mr. Sidney Walker...
