Just announced a deal with CBS for prime-time and Saturday afternoon dates, similar to the one with NBC. Also benefitting from the deal is Showtime (owned by CBS). Adonis Stevenson-Bika on April 4 and Figueroa-Burns on May 9 in Saturday afternoon fights first announced for CBS. And if what was posted on another thread is true, Friday Night Fights are moving to Saturdays -- monthly instead of weekly -- on ESPN (instead of ESPN2) and going for higher-caliber cards and more name fighters ... with Haymon being part of the deal. He owns all the boxing now. Everyone else -- Golden Boy, Top Rank, HBO, etc. -- left holding their peckers.
Interesting, wouldn't say he's taken over. Slowly but surely. He's definitely had some big plans, I don't think he'll continue setting up soft touches for his fighters now that he can make in-house money on his own network deal. Bika-Stevenson is not that bad
I question this method of exposing boxing to the mainstream. It's kind of strange that all these network deals are time-buys. The networks don't lose anything, but I really don't see how this can blossom into a revenue generating machine. Casual viewers don't care for boxing. They hardly care for MMA and WWE these days and both are on the downtrend. I see this as a move to flood the market with product and hope for best. IMO, for boxing to change it needs to be rebuilt from the ground up at the amateur level to the pros. If top dollar was spent on development of the youth programs and facilities, it would translate to higher caliber boxers in the pros. Haymon is attempting the trickle down economic model here, and I don't think it is the right move. Boxing on network tv is great and all, but we need to make it a community/neighborhood sport for it to thrive again like we want it too.
good to see boxing making its way back to mainstream but i question some of the quality matches he is putting on. stevenson bika is a bit of a joke..
Little early to say, since he hasn't put on one show yet. We'll have to adopt a wait and see attitude to this newest wrinkle. However, how great can Haymon's cards be if he's only signed the champ in two of the seventeen divisions? He's missing all the kingpins: Klitschko, Huck, Kovalev, Ward, Golovkin, Alvarez, Pacquiao, Crawford, Uchiyama, Walters, Rigondeaux, Yamanaka, Inoue, Gonzalez, etc. Are people going to be so happy that boxing has returned to regular tv that they don't care none of the champs are there? Isn't that what Friday Night Fights was for already? Showcasing contenders who weren't ready to move to prime cable and pay per view? Plus, to take over completely, Haymon would need to make agreements with the outlets in Britain, Germany, Japan, and Mexico, the other major boxing regions. Maybe, hook something up with Thailand and South America too.
Good point, his roster will be spread thin. UFC ran into this problem when they moved from Spike to Fox and started having shows every week or so. They had twice as many fighters as Haymon and all of the champs when they did that too.
How's it going to be a community sport if it's not on community television for the community to see? This is how you inspire people to become amateurs and go to the boxing gymnasiums.
I'll take Stevenson bika over some of the other ****e Stevenson's been fighting. Every match up Al haymon has made so far in 2015 has been better than a lot of the ****e we got last year. Hes putting these fights on terresetrial tv. Your a bit of a joke mate. Look further than your nose. How can people not see the big picture with Al haymon.
Somebody been watching different HBO fights than me ... like their guys don't fight tomato cans and they don't put on stinkers?
Oversaturation:deal the law of diminishing utility will start to take hold fairly quickly with casual fans, especially as the match quality begins to erode.
this is also what happened to schaeffergbp/hbogreenburg exclusivity deal. hbo gave them all the dates, tr didn't play ball and match their fighters to gbp's and make exciting fights. in the end, gbp/hbo ended up showing mismatches. interesting what gbp will do here. are they going to play on both sides of the fence and risk alienating hbo again??
