PBC is the closest thing boxing has ever had to having a true."boxing league" ala UFC where a true television product can be produced to grow the sport. As long as rankings are in effect with mandatory fights taking place where guys can't duck eachother and hide behind managers, promoters, and networks, than this is simply an amazing thing for the sport of boxing. Can't wait!
Well, the more exposure these televised boxers should get as a part of this massive TV deal the more they'll be the ones The casual fan will view as number 1 and number 2. A new fan who has never see a Mayweather or Klitchko fight due to PPV prices and subscription based television won't care much about them, but may care about the guy he's seen fight on NBC 3 or 4 times. And while that won't make that individual truly the best, the general consensus on who is may change based upon their televison presence.
You don't have to. But to have such a closed view and to not want new or casual fans to enjoy the sport and form their own opinions will help to keep boxing stuck between a rock and a hard place. The same place it's been for the past 15+ years.
I just want to see good match and the best fighting the best If the new format does that then great But up until now Haymon has actively blocked great fights for his own gain so lets not go on about how this is for the fans everything promoters / managers do is self serving What holds boxing back is TV NETWORKS AND PROMOTERS not working with each other
I agree about the promoters and networks, but also we do have the power to entice new fans with word of mouth. Potential fans may be turned off by industry know it all's who believe their opinions to be fact. If we take the time to hear out casual fans opinions and recognize them, as well as add our own, than a perfect marriage of fans could be made. More fans equal more potential ratings. If Haymon wants the ratings and for PBC to succeed I think he knows he's going to have to let go of the old way of doing things and adopt a new formula.
My friends who are casuals are put off by things like Garcia ( No.1 LWW ) and Peterson ( ranked contender ) fighting at 143lb for a non title fight They are put off by Stevenson v Kovalev not happening ( how likely is that now Stevenson signed for Haymon ? ) They are put off by 'champions' like Quillin vacating belts and therefore not acting like champions ( it is a joke he can vacate to not fight Korobov but step straight back to fight Lee ) I hope Haymon / PBC ( like all other networks / promoters ) are big enough to admit they played a part in doing a lot of damage to the sport to get where they are now Again, its all self serving, nothing else I want champions to be champions and even match ups So no need for the waffle and sales pitch
I think people would still watch it, because it featured the two best welterweights, and fighters in the world going at it. And there's historical precedent for me to say that, because something like this has already happened. Carlos Zarate and Alfonso Zamora were both undefeated champions at bantamweight in the 70's, and eventually, they faced off in a non-title 10 rounder. Fans went crazy anyway and packed the forum anyway...because it was a good match-up. If really good match-ups are made, regardless of who makes them, they should be commended, because that's what is going to increase interest in the sport. It's the quality of fight that matters...not the title.
Uh...yeah he would. Pac's earned the status of cultural icon/folk hero in that nation, and you damned well better be certain that his status would be upgraded to full on demigod were he to defeat Mayweather in a fight that would almost certainly garner its share of main-stream attention. C'mon now...Boxing isn't as popular as it once was, but it still holds the attention of a lot of people around the world.
THIS is football to me. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ea/Aidan_O'Mahony_&_Eoin_Bradley.jpg Ive always referred to what you call football as soccer.
* Given that some of the best and most enjoyable fights are taking place in the lower weight classes, you're missing out by choosing not to give a damn about it. And, an attitude like that really makes me question how serious of a fan you are. A good fight is a good fight, regardless of weight class. * If you think Peterson is actually a champion at 140, then you're part of the problem. He's simply a contender in the division. A pretty good one, but hardly worthy of being referred to as the champion. I would like to see the real and lineal champion Garcia defend at the weight. Still, it's not a bad fight, and worth checking, imo, given the quality of the fighters.
Like I said to the other guy, THIS is Football to any self respecting Irish man. http://www.gaa.ie/content/images/se...development/Down_Kildare_Football_SF_2010.jpg Why should Irish people have to qualify their own sport? You never hear Americans calling their sport "American Football" You never hear Australians calling their sport "Aussie Rules" Yet Irish people should refer to their sport as "Gaelic"??, bull**** Its football, the thing where guys dive around and pretend to be injured for half the game is soccer.
And now to put the troll on the ignore list. An "Irish" man who doenst know the difference between football and soccer. Shameful. That alone is enough reason to put you back on the list.
You're English arent you? You speak about spending £ instead of euro and you u8se the term "mate" You dont know the difference between football and soccer. Was daddy from Ireland and you want to be part of it? At best you're from the North.
You're not telling me anything I don't already know. I'm Canadian, and I've never been a fan of their website. Even when they were doing "In This Corner", you had to search under "Other Sports" to find news about boxing. That being said, it still doesn't change the fact that boxing is extremely popular in other locations...like the Phillipines, where Pacquiao is absolutely revered.
