I was a fan of Alan back in the day...from the '72 olympics onwards...through his pro career - British & Euro titles up to winning and losing the Undisputed World Championship.

What are the views of the guys on the forum? Had it not been fopr MMH, how long would he have reigned? At his best, how did Monter stack up H2H versus the likes of Hamsho, Obel, Scypion, Parker, Sibson etc?

I knwo the above is slighttly rambling, apologies for that, I would just like to read your views...cheers!

Good enough to win a title, but not good enough to keep it long.

How's this crazy bit of information.
In England, Minter was an 8-5 favorite over Hagler in their title fight.

I remember this. It's a bit like the England football team, whjenever the World Cup or Euros come around, are always like 3rd or 4th favourites in the betting  ...I'm English and I think it's funny.

I think the reason for these odds was that a lot of people saw MMH had a "close" one with Antuofermo, Minter had a resounding win over Vito second time around...put 2 and 2 together and got 5! I also think there was a perception in some quarters, perpetuated by Minter, it must be said, that Hagler was a gym fighter...boy, everyone got that wrong!

I actually went to the fight (no, I didn't throw any bottles (I was just too young to drink )). The atmosphere was poison, and MMH was not phased in the slightest...what a fantastic display he put on.

Alan Minter did post several good wins in his career, and
    a couple of excellent wins.

March 16, 1980,,,,,,,,, Las Vegas, Nevada
That first Title Fight with Vito Antuofermo was a bit controversial.
The scoring was all over the place.

Alan Minter controlled the early action, but the 'bull' Antuofermo
came on in the middle rounds, even flooring Alan with a left-hook and right hand to the body
    in the 8th round.
Vito pressed the action from the 8th round on, as Minter more-or-less counter-punched.

    Scoring in rounds;
    Minter 9-5-1
Minter 13-1-1 (Scoring by British Judge; Roland Dakin)
    Antuofermo 6-5-4

Even the boxing press had it for Vito Antuofermo 10-5-2 in voting.
The Associated Press had it 6-5-4 (145-143) for Vito Antuofermo

I remember watching the fight, and I was no Antuofermo fan. I thought Vito won too.
    Bad Decision!

I thought Minter did enough to win the 1st Antuofermo fight. Also, the knockdown may have been counted as such but was really more of a push and slip than anything else. Vito wasn't a puncher at all and never hurt Minter in either of their fights.

I liked Minter. He was a tough typically European stand-up boxer/puncher. Kind of like Maurice Hope in that they both had stiff right jabs and hard straight lefts. Minter's biggest weakness was his tissue paper thin skin. He would have no chance against a sharp punching boxer for that reason. Ronnie Harris sliced him to ribbons and Sugar Ray Seales was doing a job on him until Alan caught him with a left.

The Hagler fight was brutal but even if Alan had skin like leather, he never could have outboxed or outpunched Hagler. Marvin was just too skilled.

I thought the KD was in the 14th? (A questionable one at that?).

I don't remember the decision being controversial, though that maybe due to me living in England! Maybe the perception of the decision in the USA was different from the UK?

Anyway, Minter sure got it right in the rematch...and the decisive nature of that victory was at least part of the reason Alan was (inexplicably) the bookies fave against MMH next time up.

    janwalshs,

    I remember that fight well.
The knockdown was kind of a push-punch-slip.
It was a legitimate body punch though.
Not what you would call in the true sense, a knock-down.

Vito did keep Minter on the ropes for pretty much the last 7 rounds.
Vito wasn't the most stylish guy around, but he was tough.
It was a very difficult fight to score.
The thought was, close fights go the champion.

    The re-match was different.

 Yeh i've had 40+ years of England footie crushers & i cant take anymore:|

My mate was also at the fight & we were only just yappin the other day to our sons what it was like back then at footie & boxing matches & we replied in one voice...CARNAGE by todays standards but just another saturday for us:lol:

Same with Sibbo/Frank Tate when they let of CS gas. Yeh Marvin was'nt taken seriously at all was here!!! There was just a few paragraphs on him & Daily Express/Daily mail i think?) stating he was workman like but not appearing to have the required killer instinct & freeze at the moment when destiny presented itself:scaredas: & as you said what with the Vito fights everyone added 2+2 & got 5:lol:

I'am glad those days are long gone with regards too the appalling behavior of English fans in general but when i was at the MGM for the Hatton/Mayweather fight it was like being in a time machine & back to the 70's/80's all over again & what a HOWL:lol: It has to be genetic:cool:

There's absolutly nothing average about being an UNDISPUTED CHAMPION & average fighters never became UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONS in the main:bart There was only 2 governing bodies back the WBA/WBC unlike the alphabete supermarket TV title's that abound today. Back then you had to fight your way up the rankings & achieve domestic & continental title's & defend them too stand a chance of getting into the top 10. Minter was a class boxer & he was just prone to cuts juxtaposed his manic desire to engage in a tear up when opportinity presented. There's **** all average about Alan Minter. He was a Brilliant Boxer who'd have given a good account of himself in any generation & it's no disgrace he lost to Hagler now is it seein that he's an ATG:smoke
