Why did Alan Minter get a shot at Antuofermo's Middleweight Title, instead of a
    re-match going to Marvin Hagler?

Was Alan Minter rated #1 before Marvin Hagler.

At the time watching it I thought Alan won comfortably. I was surprised when i saw people on here had scored it for Vto but maybe I was caught up with the euphoria of one of our boys winning the world title on foreign soil, it always seemed in fact it was a bigger achievement winning a title back then.
I will say though that I thought Alan didn't box his normal fight, he had a history of getting into wars and getting cut but in this fight he took the safety first approach and spent most of the fight trying to keep his eyes away from Vito's head. It seemed to me that he boxed within himself. He was more relaxed in the second fight and really showed that he was a class above Vito.
    Average fighter, no way!

Thats dead right Al:yep Back then with only the WBA/WBC it took a long time to get a crack at the title or even an eliminater! Like you i had Alan a worthy winner but what with todays outlook at scoring a fight all down to who was pressing it just don't speak for the actual reality that it's a boxing match & not a fight. We always say "we are off too the boxing"!! & the yanks would say "we're off too the fight"!! As we know if only Minter had'nt torn into Marvin i always thought he had a great chance of winning but unfortunatly as time flies by Alans just not getting the respect IMO that he deserves for being a genuine Undisputed World Champion who won it the hard way as they all had too back then!!

    That fight Antuerfermo-Minter I;
Was one difficult fight to score.
Depends on the style that you liked.
Antuofermo's brawling style was not liked by anyone.
He never seemd to land a clean punch.
He was always hitting arms, shoulders and hips.
Alan Minter fought a good fight that day, and I don't think anyone would
have been upset with a draw either.

The Boxing Press had it 10-5-2 for Antuofermo.
The Press are usually pretty accurate.

Very good middleweight. If Hagler had chosen a different profession,Alan would have held that title for a year or so longer.

    Stevie G,

I think we would have seen a Minter-Hamsho 'Trilogy'.

:good We indeed could have Duce. Their fight was very close, and I think Alan was very unlucky to have been given the short end of the stick. I could n't believe it when Tony Sibson knocked Minter out.

Stevie, of course that was the end of career Minter who got clocked by Sibson. Minter always had a good pair of whiskers so I was stunned as well. Regarding Hamsho, I recall at the end of their fight the doofus who interviewed Minter said something really goofy like, "Alan, I'll bet your pleased that you lost on a decision rather than a stoppage." (or something like that). Minter's expression towards him was priceless. I recall Minter saying something like "I don't think the jab matters as much here as does in England." It was a very good fight and I think it was at the end of the 2nd round where Minter nailed Hamsho with a shot and it was the closest thing I had seen at that point in Hamsho's career to going down. Minter could throw one every so often, much like in the Seales fight.

No. Hagler had a desperate sense of urgency, knew he had no chance of intimidating Minter in that hostile environment, and felt his back against the wall. The sting of his draws and defeats were fresh in his mind. There was a real sense he might become the Bennie Briscoe of his era. This wasn't the neutral turf of Las Vegas he was challenging Minter on. He knew that going the distance again meant defeat. When it came to dealing with Minter, Hagler and Antuofermo were Americans first, and Vito clandestinely supported Hagler's bid at Wembley, giving him valuable advice based upon his own rematch experience with Minter there, advice Hagler thanked him for afterward. (I do not recall Marv uttering a peep of protest over Vito getting an immediate return with Minter, probably due to Roland Dakin's outrageous scoring. Between them, they had an earned respect and mutual assurance that whoever got out of England with the title would grant a rematch to the other. Hagler succeeded, and made good on their bargain.)

There was a little bit of tension before the Minter-Hagler fight.
Both fighters didn't show respect for each other.
I believe Alan wasn't all that impressed with Hagler's fight resume.

The way he went after Marvin in the 1st round, it looked like he was trying to take
Hagler's aura of invincibilty away from him.

This thread got me interested in Minter - Antuofermo I. I'd never scored that fight. I guess it's a bit like Hagler - Leonard in it depends greatly on what you're looking for. I scored it 9-6 for Minter.
Minter was a very good technician with a strong chin. Very good fighter. I think if he'd have fought a different fight against Hagler he could have got it into the mid to later rounds, but I just think Hagler was a little better in most categories and always wins that fight. A huge difference between Hagler and Minter was head movement.

I've always been impressed by Minter's 1st win over Antuofermo. It showed that Alan wasn't just a clueless slugger in that he adhered to a disciplined plan and stayed with it. He was smart enough to frustrate Vito and negate the Italian's brawling, slop throwing style for 15 rounds. I thought he clearly won that fight. He and his trainer had a code for dealing with whatever Vito did and he used a measured, conservative type of strategy throughout all the to the final bell. he just walked over Vito and dominated him in the rematch and I thought for all the world that if it were not for Alan's great misfortune of being in the same era with hagler he would have racked up a string of successful defenses and would have had a protracted title reign.

Alan lives not far from me. I see him around sometimes. An underrated fighter. A hard man with good skills. Fought the wrong fight against Hagler. Would have lost anyway but would have liked to have seen a rematch.

Just saw a replay of the Minter-Hagler fight.
    Brutal.

Alan did land a pretty good straight left that backed up Hagler briefly,
Marvin did look 'shakin, not stirred'.
Alan had a shot right their, if could have put a couple of straight lefts down the 'pike' so to speak.
But he missed, and Marvin countered.

That was the first time, I ever saw Marvin hurt.
