Alan Minter was on a bit of a roll. He was European middleweight champion and chasing a world title shot. His management team wanted to keep Minter busy, and found a decent opponent in Monty Betham. For those who want to watch the fight online, here's a link to my Daily Motion channel: This content is protected
Minter in vicious form. Alan wasn´t the biggest puncher in the world but when he put his punches together he was class. His demolition of Billy Knight (3xABA champ and 1972 Olympian) who looked a sure-fire future champ when he turned pro was even more destructive. Unfortunately, he turned into the 1970´s version of Errol Christie.
or he knows where his commissions come from, providing of course the account is favorable to the Insures, if you get my meaning. was Minter a Poor Man's Froch, by chance?
Thanks for putting these old films up. However good Minter was, I can't see a modern fighter losing a string of eight-rounders and getting disqualified for not trying then becoming a world champion.
Those losses were caused by bad cuts around the eyes. The DQ was after he'd lost two earlier fights to the same guy due to cuts. I'm not sure why his opponent didn't make an effort, though.
I always like Minter, the way he came back from those horrendous cuts defeats and with the exception of Ronnie Harris he was winning easily. The double disqualification was a joke. If anyone should have been disqualified it was bully boy Gratien Tonna in their 1st fight. Minter hammered him in the return which unfortunately I can´t find a film of. Hopefully one day it will show up. Minter showed his class with great displays against Sugar Ray Seales (2 years before lost a close decision in Hagler´s hometown and drew in his own), Tony Licata, trilogy with Kevin Finnegan (2nd fight arguably should have gone Kevin´s way), Billy Knight and winning 2 EBU fights in Italy (unfortunately brave Angelo Jacopucci died) and his forementioned one sided destruction of Tonna. Minter will never enter a top 10 of greatest middleweight of all time but he was classy boxer puncher who never quit, rebounded from heart breaking losses (also a causing a ring death) and took risks in winning World and European belts away from home. Shame he´s only remembered for the Hagler loss and the insanity that followed.
You know, weirdly, when I think of Minter the first fight that comes to mind is Hamsho. Makes no sense at all, but there we are.
No. He said he wouldn't lose his title to that black man. He and Hagler didn't get on, and the feud started some time before they fought. And yes, he did lose to that black man.
Hi Buddy. Just before he went to the olympics I saw him in a pub down Hackney way, we had a chat about the upcoming event, I asked him if he was nervous about the trip, his reply " not worried about who I am fighting, am worried they put me in a chalet with that ginger nutter from Liverpool " the boxer in question for those younger posters was my all time fav, Robbie Davies, one of the roughest, toughest, hardest hitting amateurs of all time, and yes a nutcase...... stay safe Reinhardt, chat soon.
