I think this sells Collins a little short. He was borderline world level when he got the McCallum fight, and that was a fight in which you could see him grow right in front of you. I've never quite bought the notion that Collins controlled the latter half of the fight (it became more of a 50-50 fight after Collins started coming on), but his effort there left a lot of people doubting McCallum. Collins vs. Johnson was a great, close fight. If any of Collins' losses exposed a lack of ability, it was the Kalambay one. Kalambay was old and no longer capable of fighting a hard twelve rounds by that point. He was there for the taking and Collins spent most of the night banging on a closed door. That felt like a much clearer decision against Collins than the one in the Johnson fight.
Good analysis Clum. I certainly had no intention of knocking Collins who made the absolute best of what he had.
Who? Shirley Jones? GTFOH Roy Jones obliterates Mintor worse than Hagler did...or did you forget that Hagler beat Mintor up mercilesslly.
No, Roy would have to come out like he did v Griffin in the rematch and very often he wouldn`t do that, no way would Jones have stopped Hearns like Hagler did.
I was being harsh, but that was by far his best punch, he didn`t set up shots that well with the jab though, by that I mean he didn`t follow up with combo`s after the jab enough.
Jones was often very negative compared to Marvin, Hagler was better at opening fighters up than Roy, he used feints much better and was a better inside fighter.
He had a a good 1-2, but I feel Johnson and the top fighters mixed it up more, Minter was a little basic and upright despite having good hand speed.
