Englishmen (fee fie foe fum!): Did any of you see Alan Minter's 1976 knockout over Sugar Ray Seales? It took place in London, and Minter won in five rounds. I believe the outcome was regarded as something of an upset...certainly that Minter won by kayo was a big surprise here in the U.S. Anyway, can you describe how the fight went? I remember reading that Minter was cut and in danger of losing when he suddenly cut loose with a devastating, fight-ending offensive. What happened?
Honestly, I have forgotten, but I have the fight on dvd. I will have a look tonight, and give you a report. Woller
if i remember rightly i believe eventually minter put a big beating on seales overwhelming him in the end.did seales fight a big chunk of his career with retina damage, and is almost blind?
Seales is holding his own in the first 4 rds that are marred by a lot of bad looking infight. Both men cut, and Minter is having a huge bump on his forehead. I the 5th Minter sends Seales to the canvas with a booming left cross. Seales rises too early expecting a mandatory 8 count, and Minter poures it on untill the referee has to rescue Seales. Woller
As I understand it, Seales fought the later years of his career partially or fully blind in one eye. I don't think he had that damage when he fought Minter however.
Thanks Woller. By the way, did you see the Minter-Tony Licata fight? It took place a few months before the Minter-Seales bout. Am I correct in believing that Minter dominated Licata for the entire bout, stopping him easily in round six?
