In terms of boxing skills alone how good was Tweety Davila? I know that Davila had a style to give many fighters trouble but was mostly on the losing end whenever he fought the higher class fighters (Gomez, Zarate, Lora, etc.). I've been watching some of his fights recently and I'm impressed with what I'm seeing so far. Very tidy textbook boxer with a style that somewhat reminds me of Harold Johnson. What would you say was his best wins and performances?
The second Duarte fight was great, but the first was a whitewash. Duarte was never in it. Davila basically treated him like a heavybag. I know Frankie had drug and alcohol issues, but not completely sure if he was in the throes of addiction then. Watching the fight, I'd have guessed so. He just wasn't there that day.
He had a good night against Alberto Sandoval, and I always thought that he was a better fighter than his younger brother Richie.
Well I was thinking of the first one because the OP is seeking out his best victorious performances, and operating under the assumption that Duarte was even half of what he was in their rematch the meeting a decade earlier would have to be just that with the two knockdowns and TKO - but if he was really in that bad a way then it's maybe not such a hot example. (or something I necessarily want so desperately to see, a world class guy licking a strung out druggie) :think
Davila was putting on a show until he got tired. This guy has been one of my favorites- Danny Lopez was my hero- and the guy I learned to fight watching. Such a clean style, knew how to use distance, had all the skills. At his peak, you had to be Zarate or Gomez to beat him. Or Eliseo Cosme, but that guy beat some good fighters.
Well, the druggie thing is just supposition on my part. I know he had issues, but not sure he was strung out at that particular time. And the fight is interesting to see just for comparison's sake with the second bout if nothing else. :good
Alberto Davila was a good fighter, but not in the same class as Carlos Zarate, who was far too tall and powerful. However, it is very hard to think of a fighter who had a more beautiful boxing style than Davila during the last forty years. I saw Davila fight in person at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California a number of times in addition to seeing telecasts of his bouts which took place at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. - Chuck Johnston
How do you think he would have fared against other BW champs such as Canizales, Harada, Fenech, Jofre, etc.?
I don't think that Alberto Davila was nearly as good as the all-time greats in the bantamweight division such as Manuel Ortiz, Eder Jofre, Fighting Harada, Ruben Oliveras or Carlos Zarate.
Davila is really beautiful to watch the more I see his fights. With the disadvantage that he had with his short stature and lack of punching power he really knew how to box. A real strong textbook pure boxer who was picture perfect. Based on his record would Davila be considered as HOF-worthy?
This content is protected Still think that Davila is one of the most underappreciated fighter. He really was a solid boxer with a nice style who still doesn’t get enough respect to this day. Was really unfortunate to have been in the same era as Zárate, Gomez, Lora, and Pintor who were just more gifted.
beautiful boxer, smaller size and less power usually than his oppponents, but did real well for himself. A pleasure to watch box
