This is a bizarre world title fight. I mean I get that the WBA doesn’t always have the most integrity but this is stretching it. Oh well should be a decent fight

This is for the WBA interim 140lb title.

I mean, it checks out... Puello is WBA #3, Alonso #4. If for some reason (behind the scenes, that we're not in the know about) both Mario Barrios & Batyr Akhmedov were unable to compete for the interim belt, I see no reason not to skip down to contenders three & four...

Alonso was born in Latin America (specifically here in the DR) but resides in Madrid and represented Spain at the Olympics, is handled by DiBella Entertainment, and is nicknamed Maravilla. Hmm, any of that sound remotely familiar? :sisi1

Puello's nickname is "Avispa" (or, "The Wasp")...and his KO ratio is higher (56%, compared with Alonso's 39..)

Guess he's the banger in this one. His best scalp to date is Patrick López, who is maybe remembered best for his mild upset over Prenice Brewer and losses to Hank Lundy and Shane Mosley...all roughly a decade ago..

I guess you’re right, just felt a bit odd to me. I guess the confusion for me moreso comes with what does being interim WBA champ even mean? They’ll fight the winner of Prograis-Taylor? Or is it interim regular champ? It just muddies things. I guess I shouldn’t complain about the participants themselves though

    Round 1

Lots of dancing around, posing, floating jabs, letting crosses sail over each other's shoulders. Puello is making the more consistent semi-solid contact and seems to buzz Alonso slightly with the left hand whipped out from behind the rear hip a few times. Alonso being very respectful, almost to a fault, stalling the action before it can even get started.

    10-9 Puello

There was apparently a bit of beef in the buildup with Puello essentially calling Alonso a fake Dominican

I don't think we are going to ever in our lifetimes see the record for "weirdest/worst WBA world interim title bout" broken...this one was a doozy:

The southpaw continues to be the bolder man, and the one landing more of his shots roped out across the chasm between them due both to his daring and his considerable reach. Alonso just flicking up a backhanded left jab, high up, looking to check Puello's right jab, keeping a close and wary eye on that cocked left.

    20-18 Puello

    Notes
    • Brian Magee 34-4-1 (24 KOs) vs. Jaime Barboza 17-4 (8 KOs)
    • Magee entered as the WBA # 4 super middleweight contender, while Barboza entered as the WBA # 5 super middleweight contender.
    • Barboza returns to the super middleweight division for the first time since 2005.

    ...like, wut??
